    Welcome to D-A-L

What is the make & model of the computer?

Do you know the make & model of the motherboard?

Is this a new problem? Were things working ok previously?

Notebook manufacturers are making it increasingly more difficult to bypass security measures so that theft of notebooks is discouraged. You won't find much help in bypassing notebook securities (if any are present) on help forums. The site (and it's members) do not provide help in this manner. (It's in the rules.) If I'm incorrect in this statement, I'm sure one of the Moderators will correct me.

Erm, actually this is a bit of a grey area. The bit of the Forum Rules that refers to hacks and cracks is talking about software hacks and cracks, not 'hacking' into your laptop hardware.

But there is still a security concern there as we don't know whether you've stolen the laptop and it's someone else's password that you're trying to bypass.

I do have some sympathy for your friend, FunkyMonkey1, as, just this weekend, I found myself aquiring a PC that had a locked BIOS and I ended up throwing the motherboard away. However, in any case, you've already given yourself the answer, which is to check out the jumper to bypass the motherboard battery and clear the CMOS. That's the only advice that we would be able to give you anyway.

If that doesn't work, you'll need to put a call into HP.
