Scanners need downtime, just like any human being. It sounds like either -
    1) its pack up its bags and gone AWOL,
    2) the transformer / PSU has gone
    3) and / or needs resetting via been unplugged and left to settle for a while.

The best course of action is to leave it unplugged for a while, let it have a vacaition. Check the transformer to see if its hot. If its hot there's power flowing, if its too hot it could potentially be entering a danger zone, where the transform could spontainious combust*.

All in all, you could just go an buy a new scanner, as the technology is constantly evolving and moving on. You can probably get a better scanner for the same amount of money you paid for you old one, if not less

*NOTE: some manufacters have heat dependant resistors which act as a swtich. They have a specific heat value and when its met by the applicance then the resistor melts and stops the electricity flowing any further)
