P 3 problem booting - pls help
i have a p3 that will not boot in fact no video comes on at all - when I turn the power on you hear the hard drive start (or CD if you put one in the drive) but nothing happens
i have already tried all the plugs and connections ie video card, RAM, hard drive etc - everything is tight
what would cause this problem???
-
Do you get anything at all on the monitor?
Such as: No Signal Input
If not: do you have another monitor to try?
-
hi
yes I have a 14 flat screen and a 17" regular monitor and neither show anything at all
what do you think about a power supply problem??? I changed the power suppIly a couple of weeks ago and the computer worked fine for about a week
I have now tried an older (but still compatible video card) and RAM from another computer and neither fix the problem
i'm thinking the new power supply could also be faulty???? Tomorrow I'm going to change it - - -
if that doesn't work I'm guessing it will have to be the motherboard>>
help is appreciated!!!

Try increasing the amount of power the PSU kicks out, but remember the cheaper it is the higher the power rating on the PSU has to be. As cheaper PSU's might have the nice high values of 600watts written on the side, but it only kicks out about 350 - 400watts.
Note: If the power supply is something like a true power then it will do pretty much what is says on the tin

hi
i just changed to power supply unit and the computer still doesn't work - how can you boost the power in the unit - the only switch I see shows 115V or 230V and I think it has to stay on the 115V - am I wrong???
-
Hi,
I best clarify. You increase the power of the PSU by buying a new more powerful supply.
WARNING!!!! DON'T CHANGE THE VOLATGE ON A PSU!!! YOU'RE PC WILL EXPLODE!!!
The standard UK PC runs on 240volts ONLY!. Make sure the swtich is set to 240 (or 230 on some supplys) at ALL TIMES

Meckanix, i think he got the message...
Millo, do you feel any heat from the Processor heatsink? I would check the connection from the PSU to the motherboard since a PC will not boot without power to the Motherboard. You are getting enough 5 and 12 volts if you HDD and CDRom are spining. A P3 doesnt require more than 300watts to boot.

Yeah, sorry about the last post. I didn't realise how big the fonts can get, lol.
Although I did have a guy at work descide that his PC wasn't booting and "couldn't switch it off via the power button on the front" (as we don't have reset buttons - http://www.fc.cz/images/Compaq/d330m.gif), and so reached around the back to "flick the on / off swtich at the back". But our PC's don't have a switch, they only have a voltage selector, and so he change the voltage to create on hell of a set of fireworks, lol.

hi
I have it set on 115 as I am in Canada . . . .The fan is working and the hard drive spins and it will try to read a CD or floppy but nothing visual comes up and I don't think the hard drive is actually reading. .. .. and I still get no beeps or anything.
Last effort before I give up is getting a power supply from a friend that I know is working and try it - and then I'll get a power supply from somewhere else . . .maybe this store just got a bad batch.
If that does't solve it it will have to be the motherboard as I've tried everything else.
thanks for your help
