I have installed the software for a new Scanner, made sure nothing was plugged in whilst I did this, when I connected the Scanner to my PC USB port and mains power the PC would not 'find/recognise'the new hardware, have tried uninstalling and trying again a number of times but still no joy..any ideas would be appreciated...thanks???

The way I've always installed things is plug in the new device with the computer turned off. Turn the computer on and it will come up found new hardware, then install the software for it. I never install the software before the device is plugged in.
It might be worth uninstalling the software, deleting the scanner if it shows in control panel/system. Reboot and start from scratch.

i had the same problem with a canon scanner, other plug and play devices were no problem, then i got a different computer and the scanner was picked up immediately i believe there must be a prob with the usb ports
