    Installing graphics card, help!!

    system= p4 intell 1.79 GHz packard bell 256 RAM
    motherboard=Micro-star Inc MS 6506 1.0
    BIOS=American megatrends inc Bios date 04/09/02
    graphics card radeon VE core/mem clock 156 32mb
    windows xp home edition

    basicly i want to upgrade my graphics card, i have bought nividia geforce mx440 (pine) 64mb.

    My mtherboards agp slot has to comply with the graphix card, ie the voltage? using a tool called everest home edition, i get a run down on my ststem specs,looking at them has got me very confused.
    i have opened up my computer case, there are 2 pci slots, white in color, and just above and to the right, brown in color, this is where my radeon card is sitting.
    sitting in pci 1 (nearest to the agp) is a card, what i believe to be the IEEE 1394 firewire conrolleR.
    using the everest tool tells this....
    under display, pci/agp ATI RV100 DDR(ATI radeon 7000/radeon=video adapter
    RV100 DDR=3d accelerater

    when i go into devices/PCI devices it lists, controller hub/audio controller/usb controller, a few other things, and the ATI radeon!! when i highlight the radeon it breaks down like this.....
    device description=ATI radeon 7000/radeon VE sdr video adapter.
    device properties..
    bus type=AGP 4.
    Bus/device/function= 1/0/0.
    device id=1002-5159.
    subsystem ID=1002-0038.
    device class=0300(vga display controller).
    revision=00.
    fast back 2 back trans..=supported,disabled.
    device features...
    66MHz operation=supported (and a box with a tick).
    bus mastering=enabled (and a box with a tick).
    AGP properties....
    AGP version=2.00
    AGP status=enabled
    supported AGP speeds=1 2 4
    current AGP speed=4

    why is it listed under the pci?
    also when i right click on screen/properties/settings/advanced/adapter/properties it says radeon ve location pci bus 1, device 0,function 0. This cannot be right as my radeon card is clearly sitting in the brown slot, marked AGP!

    I am at a loss, because i have tried and failed to install my new card, all i get isa message saying 2no video input" or "cannot display this video mode, change computers display input to 1280,1024 (the moniter is a philips 170c flat screen).
    I have tried to uninstall the radeon drivers, disabling the device in device manager, using a tool called diver cleaner pro to errase all ati files, yet it does nor recognise the new card. sometimes,it gets as far as saying nividia in the top left corner of the screen, but then the screen goes crazy, and goes blank or garbled.

    Even tho i believed i have removed the ati files, when i put the radeon back into the agp slot, and reboot the device manager recognises it and the radeon is back on line?!!! is this normal, i have no cd to go with this card, so is the memory of it still on my compter?, or perhaps it is intergrated with the pci device somehow?

    btw my agp slot is brown and 65 mm in lenth, with i dividing line 40 mm down the interface (this is where all the newer cards have their dividing groove) my geforce card has two grooves, one for the 1.5 voltage( like on my agp interface) and one to its left, i think 4 the 3.3 volts.

    please can someone help me, i would be a very happy bunney if you could, im going bonkers over this one lmao!!!

    I wouldn't be too worried about the Radeon being reported as a PCI card. And it's normal that Windows detects it and automatically installs it - it does remember the drivers you used even though they weren't actually in use (it stores them in the Plug 'n' Play file cache).

    If you haven't already done so, I would recommend the following action:

    1. Put the Radeon card back in its original AGP slot.
    2. Change your display settings to 640x480 resolution and 16 colours if you can or, if you can't get it that low, set it to 800x600 with 256 colours.
    3. Reboot the PC.
    4. Right-click on My Computer and select the Manage option from the context menu.
    5. Select Device Manager in the list and then double-click on Display Adapters on the right-hand side.
    6. Delete all display adapters that are listed.
    7. Close this screen and then shut down the computer.
    8. Take out the Radeon card and put in the GeForce card. Re-connect the monitor.
    9. Switch the PC on and install the GeForce card.
    10. Reboot and set the display properties.

    Let us know if that helps and, if not, which point it went wrong at.

    please can someone help, how is it that my computer will only recognise my radeon card, even when i unintall it, disable it and remove ati files from my computer when i put it back in?!
    And why is my radeon device listed under pci devices( it says so when i use everest home edition) under AT&T Lucent IEEE firewire controller? My computer was bought as a package, from pakard bell, you can see the whole lot if you go to packard bell website, type 010947420034, under the product serial number, it lists my motherboard, agp cabibilties etc.
    Please help if you can, thank you

    The only suggestion i can make is that you reset the cmos by taking out the onboard battery for 60 seconds. Put it back in with your new radeon card fitted and turn on the computer go straight to the bios load fail safe defults and prceed as normal.If this dosent work i would suggest formatting the hard drive and reinstalling windows that always works.
