    Question Need Help: Speaker Configuration

    Hello,
I'm having trouble with my speaker configuration. I have an AC97 Audio Codec (ALC850). The sound comes out fine for all the speakers (Front and Rear) except for the Centre/ Subwoofer. I can only configure the speakers to the point where sound will work for all speakers except the centre speaker, or all speakers except the subwoofer; never the centre and the subwoofer at the same time. (Actually, I can get the centre speaker to play its normal sounds, and the sounds of the subwoofer, but the latter is very quiet, almost impossible to hear- I'm not sure if this is significant.) I'm also not sure what informaton you require to help me with this problem, or whether I've already told you enough, so I will be happy to tell you whatever you need to know.
    Thanks for your time,
    Vanessa.

Are you sure that your PC supports 6-channel or 5.1 speakers?

    2 channels = Front left +right
2.1 channels = Front left + right and subwoofer
4 channels = Front left + right and rear left + right
4.1 channels = Front left + right, rear left + right and subwoofer
5.1 channels = Front left + right, rear left + right, centre and subwoofer.

Do you have a program called SoundMAX installed on your PC? You might have an entry on your Start Menu for it or an icon in the system tray down by your clock.

yep, my computer supports it. Don't worry about it, though, I sent an email to Realtek's Tech support and I got an email back today. It told me to get an even *newer* driver. I'm downloading it right now, so hopefully no more problems soon. Simple fix! as I was thinking/hoping it would be. (But I shouldn't hold my breath, I know; not when computers are involved.) I'm sure I'll put up another post if that doesn't fix things.
    Thanks DJNafey!

Nope, don't have soundMAX. What of it?
Also, I sent another email to Realtek, waiting for reply. Not sure yet how helpful they'll be!
(Thanks again for the help, DJNafey)

SoundMAX is a sound card application that lets you switch between different sound settings (graphics equaliser etc) and different speaker configurations. There are options in that application to switch between 2, 4 or 5/6 speakers. SoundMAX is the only one that I'm familiar with but, if you have any similar sound card utility on your PC, you might find similar options.

I have a similar program, but I've already been fiddling around with it, to no luck. I'll just keep trying.

Yes, DJNafey: it's Good News. I decided to have another bash at getting the centre speaker to work, (did I tell you, it hasn't been working at all lately).

So you know all my speakers link up to this one main control box with all the volume knobs, right, and to help me with fixing my issue, I decided to have music playing from the computer. I turned off all the speakers except for the centre one, so once I started fiddling around with the connections to the computer I'd know straightaway when the speaker worked. So I started fiddling and reconnecting in the silence, expecting at every change of plug Greenday to come blasting out. Unfortunatley, in spite of my valiant efforts, even my most heartiest attempts were being somewhat unsuccessful. And seeing as I had spent hours slaving over these speakers, I decided it was prudent to pick up that little knobby box and crush it into a million tiny bits of scrap f*&%^#g plastic. So I've not got it 1cm off the table before "...dont wanna be an American Idiot..." SCREAMS from that tiny bity centre speaker.

    I was...surprised.

Look, I don't really know what happened, but me and my speakers are all One Big Happy Family now. Thanks for all the input DJNafey!

    THE END...(or is it?!)
