Umm.. dont buy CHEAP Garbage.. it leads to NO Tech support/Instructions/ and NO Warrenty. Spend anouth 80$ and get XFX, or PINE.

ok, well I bought the 5200 and it ''kinda'' improved gaming performance, but not as much as I would have liked, so I have bought another 512MB RAM and am upgrading my OS to XP Home. I have also upgraded my Graphics Card (again) to an NVIDIA® GeForce FX5700, 256MB DDR - TV Out - DVI, I assume this is a better card, I was just wondering what you all think, weather it was a good Idea or not, thanks people.
    Kind Regards,

With twice the video memory, yes the 5700 is a better graphics card. However, whether that resolves your issue or not, I don't know because I don't think you told us why you were buying a new graphics card in the first place.

Installing Windows XP Home is probably a good idea but, as you haven't said what operating system you use at the moment, it's hard to say how much of an improvement it will be.

In most cases, chucking in an extra 512Mb would be a good upgrade. Again though, we don't know how much memory you've currently got so the amount of benefit is impossible to gauge.

So, without actually committing myself to anything(!), yes you've probably bought a load of good stuff

Ok, well I had Win98SE, I have 768MN RAM, I bought a new graphics card to start of with because my games were really jumpy and choppy. Now what do you think?
    Thanks DAL.

I meant to add, that I'm upgrading to WinXP Pro, not home. so do you think this will improve my gaming performance. Oh and one more thing, I'm seriously thinking about upgrading my CPU from a 2Ghz IntelCeleron, 533Mhz FSB, to a 3Ghz Intel Pentium 4, 800Mhz FSB (with hyper threading), and also upgrading my MOBO as it wont support that CPU, but I dont know what to get, any help, would be GREAT. Thanks guys.

Windows 98 will almost always get WORSE with more than 256Mb RAM so, from that point of view, upgrading to Windows XP is definitely a good move

Buying a graphics card with loads of power, such as the 5700, means that the graphics card can take hefty games in its stride and won't be relying so much on your system's processor and memory power to keep the graphics going. The end result is better performance, i.e. smoother graphics that produce better rendering and give you better support for advanced features such as environmental details like shadowing, etc. at higher resolutions and colour depths. Good move

As a general rule, I really like Gigabyte motherboards. They're not the cheapest but they do perform well, are easy to install (with good documentation) and are generally well-featured and very reliable.

That processor upgrade would certainly give you a boost for gaming. Pentium 4s feature more level 2 cache (very fast access memory) than Celerons which is good for intensive games.

To get the best from your system, don't "upgrade" your Windows 98 install - wipe your hard disk clean and start from scratch with a clean install of XP.

Make sure you can get to all of the latest clever features of your new graphics card by ensuring that you download the latest version of DirectX.

    Hope that helps

So BEFORE I install XP I should wipe my Hard drives? is that right? can I keep some stuff I have on them with out any harm? Thanks DJ!

During the XP installation, it will ask you whether you want to format (wipe) your hard disk in FAT32 format (which is what you've currently got for Windows 98), NTFS format (which is better for XP) or leave it alone. You should tell it to format as NTFS. Once it's done that, it will then start copying in the new Windows files onto the freshly wiped hard disk.

This will wipe EVERYTHING off of your C:\ drive (or whichever drive you tell it to install onto). If you have partitioned your hard disk into separate drives, e.g. a C:\ drive, an E:\ drive, an F:\ drive, etc, then you can copy your files that you want to keep onto another drive. Alternatively, you can copy them to floppy disk, burn them to CD/DVD or get a USB thumb drive to temporarily transfer them to another computer for safe-keeping.

I have two Hard Drives,a 40 (primary) and 20 (slave) gig, can I transfer the stuff I want to keep to the slave drive and wipe the primary and install XP on to that, then put the stuff I wanted to keep back into the primary (now XP) with out any harm or trouble? thanks again DJ.

Yes, you certainly can - that's the easiest and fastest way of backing up and restoring data in this kind of situation.
