CD Drives not reading
When the PC has booted and there is a CD in the drive the CDs can be read as normal, but it the cd drawer is opened and closed agiain the cd cannot be read
This happens with both cd the dvd drives simultaniously, have changed cables, firmware latest version, removed drives from system all to no avail. I also have simular problem with USB ports.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Sounds a bit bizarre. What operating system are you running?
If you go into Device Manager and go into the properties of the CD and DVD drive, is there an option labelled 'Auto Insert Notification' which you can enable?

It is running Windows XP Pro, the auto play is set to "prompt for action"
This is a friends machine and I have now discovered that a memory stick inserted into a USB does exactally the same, except it requests it to be formatted.
I used to do PC support but have no experiance with XP !
In desperation I have installed SP2 to no avail. I am beginning to supect the motherboard....

Windows XP can be a real pain in the ....
I'm not very experienced with XP either, to be honest. Is there a different auto-play option other than "Prompt for action", i.e. can you switch it off so that it doesn't try to mess about with it and just let you access it in Windows Explorer?
I would also want to do a similar thing with the memory stick but I'm not sure how you would set that as the drive disappears as soon as you unplug it from the USB port.
Could possibly need a driver update for the motherboard's IDE controllers I suppose. You could also try deleting the IDE controllers from Device Manager and let Windows detect them again when you reboot (at your own risk!!).
