on startup i see a message saying: please restart and select proper boot device ....

    Hi.

    I have just built a system which has a p4 3.4ghz lga775 socket, a asus p5p800 motherboard, 512 sd ram ddr400, 120gb hd, on-board lan and sound and a radeon 925 250mb graphics card.

    Right lets get started,

when i turn on my computer, every thing goes well on the P.O.S.T. So every thing is ok there.

Right so i leave the computer to boot, then i see something like, please restart and select proper boot device or insert media.. so i install windows xp professional cd and it starts to load,

it goes well until its copied all of the OS files over, then when it restarts, i see checking computers hardware configuration again, so the cd is reating it self and not going onto the next step for installation.

Before anyone asks, NO im not asked to access the cd. on my old system i am but here, it just automatically starts the cd and accesses it.

can anyone help? if i take out the cd i get that stupid media message again. the hard drive is set to primary master through the jumpers and on the bios.

Have you still got this problem Matt_19? Sounds to me like the hard disk isn't configured properly in the BIOS. Could be that enough of the parameters are there for Windows Setup to see it and copy the files to it but, on reboot, it sounds like the BIOS can't boot from it so it's looking for other boot devices and finding your CD.

I'm assuming of course that it's not just the Boot Sequence in the BIOS booting from your CD before it's even looked for your hard disk?

Hi, i put the hdd back into my old computer, and it worked.. this is the one it was in to start with.. no the bios was configured properly. I put a 14gb hd which had been fomatted into my new computer and it worked great. Got xp installed and everything. I tryed to use the 120 as a slave but it would stop the pc from loading.

You see, i didn't format the whole 120gb hdd.. i only fomatted the c: partition. when i tryed to access fdisk on my new computer for the 120, i got fixed disk error.. i could access it on my old computer and one of the partitions wasn't displayed:

    i had c: e: and f:

e wasn't display.. maybe this has some kind of connection... i ran scan disks : chkdsk and everything was ok. I think it just needs to be reformatted.. i can't do this yet as i have gb's of data that need to be backed up..im going to buy some blank dvds asap.. let me know what you think of the above

i think i just need to reformat the whole hdd.. ill let you know the out come in the end anyway.. thanx for the reply
