    CD drive problems

Recently I was messing around with my computer and unplugged the CD drive cables... but when I put them back in I started having problems. When I use CD as the first boot device, the computer recognizes the CD drive but when it gets to "boot from cd..." it will not go any farther. I cant run the windows install disk or anything at this point. Alternatively if I boot from the hard drive first, the computer does not recognize the CD drive and although I can get to windows I cannot use the drive. Both the power and data cables are in firmly... any ideas?

Have you got the IDE data cable round the wrong way? The red stripe should be pointed towards the power plug.

When you were "messing around" with your PC, did you change any jumper settings?

checked the connections on the motherboard?
when you say: "When I use CD as the first boot device, the computer recognizes the CD drive but when it gets to "boot from cd..." it will not go any farther."
how do you know the computer recognizes the CD drive?
do you see the drive in bios? do you see the drive in device manager? (if you boot to windows). have you checked drivers and/or properties there?

is there any connection to possible problems to the reason you were "messing around" with the cables?

    newuser; are you stynkyd?

the same cable could be your problem...

to test; try each, one at a time, at the end of the cable.

see if they work one at a time.

if so you will need to figure out how to master/slave them or add another cable perhaps.

maybe need to set both to cable select?

No thats not me... when the boot from cd stall comes I know the computer recognizes the drive because it shows the name of it under secondary master drive, along with all my other drive info...

Ok I got it... the two end pins of the disk drive are bent flat. Great!
