    computer turns on by itself

i got an old CPU intel celeron 1.7 400fsb for my computer. when i got the CPU some pins were bent a bit but i straightned them out and it fits fine into its socket. my motherboard is a FIC VG31. it had an Intel P4. i asked emachines tech support and they said the CPU should work with the mobo.

first you had to turn it on manually and everything kicked on, the HDD turned on, cd rom worked, but the monitor never came on. i just put a new floppy in and tried switching psu's and for it to turn on you have to plug it into the wall. once you plug it in u hear a click then cpu fan spins, but nothing else works, no HDD no cdrom on. you use to have to hold down the on/off button in the front to turn it off, but nowu press it a bit the computer turns right off.

does it sound like the cpu or mobo?

    Little bit confusing to me.

Checked the cabling of the PSU ? There is a 12V cable that probably is not connected to the motherboard. It´s a 4 pin plug near the cpu socket.

everything is plugged in fine. everything worked until i put a new floppy in and switched power supplies. i switched them before and it worked, but once i connected the floppy and plug in the PSU to the wall, the computer clicks on by itself with only the CPU fan running.

OK, did you check the floppy cable? Is it lined up pin1 to pin1? Not likely to keep a PC from booting, but it can as a power drain.

initial look at the specs does not show support for celeron.

Ok, it supports the Celeron at 1.7, 1.8 and 1.9 GHZ at 400FSB only.

So, why if the you have the right processor, does it not display video? Have you checked the Temp of the PRocessor? Is it warm, Hot, Scalding or cold?

the CPU feels luke warm. i forget if this CPU is 400FSB or 533FSB. i dont think it would be 533 since its an older one.
