Hi all
I reallly need help!!
I want to copy all my files from my Hard Disk(fujitsu-6GB) from my old (non-functioning) computer (pentium3-win98) to my other computer (pentium 4-xp) so I disconnected the HD from the win98 computer.
and now I have some quesions about connecting it to my win-xp computer before I open the computer box.
1) my xp-computer is a tower can I just ly it down and continue working with it?
2) i've read somewehere that I should temporarily connect the HD to the secondery-IDE port (and temporarily disconnect the connected CD-ROM ) or alternatively is there a free port for connecting my hd?(I didnt open computer(xp) box yet so I dont know)
3) about jumpering: should i set it as slave, master, csel?
4) I suupose that after phisically install HD I should rescan disks from disk management .am I right?
I appreciate so much your time and effort to read this![]()

Towers can be put on their side.
Connecting the HDD from the Old machine to the new one can be done either way, slaving the drive to the Primary Master or removing the CDRom from the Secondary and keeping the drive as master. I would only caution on the 2nd choice because you may need the CDRom for programs to load while diagnosing/Transfer of the old HDD.
Depending of it the HDD boots without problems. It may not be the master boot drive, but it will still affect bios. You will need to go into bios and add the drive to which ever IDE Port you put it on. Have the Bios autodetect the drive to ensure that it will atleast be recognized, which is half the battle. Exit and save settings and then continue your boot into XP. If the bios likes the drive it most like will show up as a new drive and you will be able to transfer your data.

thx very much 4 ure quick help
I aventually conncetd the HD-6GB from the old computer to the new computer as a slave to my primary HD.
oh, I forgot to swich jumper from CSEL to SLAVE but the computer detected my new HD right away as a new hardware with no prob![]()
- now (after copying files from that disk to my new computer) I want to put a new os on this disk and then move the HD back to my old computer/is that possible?
- the os I would like to put on that HD is linux or maybe img-copying of my windows-xp OS from this new-computer-HD to my 6 HD are these both realistic options?
thanks again
Its possible to install a new OS to the 6giger. Now Linux would be fine, however, you can not have 2 copies of the same serial of XP or any MS OS. (Unless you have a site-license that allows for multiple copies!)
XP is a large OS to begin with and the 6 gig will be alittle on the small side (Have a co-worker with a 4gig and XP PRo...we stripped out alot of extra files just to make it work and no Documents extra!)
thx again aphJN for the reply. Infact, I do know that its possible to install Linux on that HDD but that was'nt my question.Originally Posted by AphJN
my question is :
My new computer has now 2 HDD. (6GB-HDD moved from my old computer + 80GB-HDD which was originally in the new computer) .
now I want to install linux to the 6GB-HDD but I want to keep my 80GB-HDD as my boot disk with windows-xp as my OS on the new computer.
but after that I want to move that 6GB-HDD back to my old computer and there I want the 6GB-HDD to become my boot disk.
thx once more![]()

I had assumed you wanted the 6 giger back in the old machine. Unless you were trying to Dual boot the XP Machine. Your plans are just fine.

now im gonna check the detailed installation of mandrake ......![]()
