    Turning over a new Leaf...

I'm giving my computer a complete overhaul! and I'm stumped on what to get, I'm after a new mother-board, graphics card, OS, and perhaps a new CPU. At the moment I'm running a MSI 645 Combo MB, a Winfast A340 TD (GeForce FX 5200), Win 98SE and a 2Ghz IntelCeleron (RAMs fine I have 768mb), I'm after a system that will happily play Half-life 2 and Doom 3 without too much trouble but I kinda dont wanna break the bank, any suggestions on what I sould change or keep would be GREATLY appreciated, thanks a Million Guys, your true champions! Thanks again!
    Cheers, Dan.

Get lots a ram(1 to 2gig), a resonable Processor (ADM 3200+ or P4 2.8) then spend the rest of your money on a video card...PCI-Express. ATI is tops in that market today. My current setup is an Intel P4 2.8 G with 2meg Cache with 1 gig ram. I have an ATI 9600 with 256meg and a simple 40gig drive. The CD/DVD setup is 1 DVD drive with 1 Plextor DVD+R/RW burner. For most of my storage I have a Firewire 200g external drive. This play's my games well enough including Doom3 and Half Life 2

Ok DAL, another question, with my setup, what should I change, what do I REALLY need to change? and if you can tell me, what sort of mother board should I get? Thanks again,
    Dan

Upgrade the OS to utilize the Full memory you have. Win9x only uses 384meg.
Next I would look at upping you HD (Cheaper than the OS and with win9x its easy to copy over) After that you are starting to enter some serious money ranges.

I've purchased Windows XP Pro, is that a good idea? and also you said my Hard Drive needed topping up, what do you mean?
    Thanks AphJN.

Getting a larger HDD. Since most Win9x systems shipped on less then 20gig drives, you can onw buy 80gigs for the same price. If you dont want to, thats also fine.

At the moment I have 2 HD, the master has 40gig and the slave has 20gig, for now this is enough, I havnt encountered any problems with limited space...yet, but do you think I should get more? Thanks again.

Thats your call. If you dont need the extra space now, dont get it now. 60gig combined is respectable. I have almost a terabyte now, but I am very much a packrat!
