Please help! Computer making eletric buzzing sound and wont start.

Hi. my computer is a packard Bell imedia, p4, 40 gigs, XP sp2, 1.5 processing speed, 300 odd ram.

I put it on stand-by and went to start it up but nothing happened. So i took out the power lead at the back and put it in again. All I hear is buzzing eletric sound from where the lead goes. The speakers sound like a car trying too start on a cold morning! The lights are on at the front.

Please help, I have a lot of unsaved data on the hard-drive.

    Hi, thanks for the reply.
No lights, no noise. I can hear the eletric buzz as i put the lead in, and the monitor works, but apart from that.......... thats it. Could the PSU need replaced. I was having problems before this happened, when I turned off the computer, it wouldnt start for ages. It made a small eletric whin and that was it, i had to keep the button in for 5 seconds to hear it again, eventually it started but would reboot a few times the run ok.

With no Fan noise (even quite fans make noise) its doubtful your PSU is working. A buzzing noise can be many many things. Do you smell anything burning?

Nop there is no burning at all. There is simply no noise at all. the monitor is ok so the power is getting through to it from the PSU but it just won't start up. Should i get a new PSU?

Your Monitor, is it plugged into the wall or the base? Do you have a spare PSU or someone you know that has a spare PSU?

The monitor is powered from the base, its does use a separate plug. Would any PSU use, i mean would I could take one from an older computer (OS 2000, P3), but im not sure if this woul work. It would take me a while to dismantle it also. Does it sound like the PSU? Even if the power is getting to the monitor?
