    Won't power up....

    I have a HP Pavilion a230n.
    AMD 2800+
    Athlon cpu,
    768 MB ram.
Getting no video. When the power button is pressed, the "on" light comes on, and stays on. The monitor immediately goes to power saving mode.
Get a flash on mouse and keyboard. No beeps.

I've changed motherboard, power supply, cpu, ram, battery, and added pci and AGP video cards.
Still nothing. Any known problems or issues with HP's cases/towers?

    Thanks!
    dale

Tidajo, i am having the exact same problem as you. i have been working on this problem for a few weeks now, on and off.

    AMD Athlon XP 2400+
    768 RAM
Had an intel chipset MOBO, but i have recently purchased a new Board, PCU, Tower, Battery, still nothing.
The only thing i have not changed is the Processor, Yet..

Why did you buy the motherboard from HP? Was it an upgrade meant for that particular Pavilion model?

Are you sure that it's supposed to be compatible with that case and all the components that you've now got fitted in it?

Try taking the graphics card out completely and then booting it up again. The internal speaker should definitely beep. If it doesn't, then the speaker is probably connected to the motherboard incorrectly. It's important to get the speaker working as the beep codes are really useful for diagnosing these problems where you get nothing showing on the screen.

Has the motherboard got on-board graphics and, if so, have you tried connecting to that?

    DJ,
thanks for answering. Sorry for the delay, as no computer = no internet.

The problem did not start with any addition or removal of any hardware or software.
My wife was online, the browser "froze", and she tried to reboot. went dead at that point.

The mobo was purchased through HP because it was the quickest/ easiest way for me to get it. Again, lack of internet for reference is a bit@%!

The board has intergrated video and sound. Added a video card via pci and agp with negative results.

My tech says that he tried to "jump the pins" on the mobo, and gets nothing. His only conclusion is that the new mobo is also bad.

Any other suggestions before I begin my fight with HP for an exchange?

Did HP send you a replacement Processor? Just a thought. Most MBs from the Majors like HP, IBM, Gateway and Dell are tested so that they dont eat any more replacement costs. THey are usually not new so its possible a failure could occur. Some questions for you:
Did you remove the memory and try to cause a beep that way?
Do the Fans come one otherwise?
Does the CDRom and Floppy lights come on?

    Hi,
I've got the same problem. Did anyone figure out what the problem/solution was?
I don't want to start swapping things, after seeing that has already been done with no (good) results.

I can tell you the following:
    Fans work
CD spins if one is place in dvd/cd drive.
The disk activity light stays on all the time....

Can't get it to go into BIOS setup, or Safe Mode or boot from floppy or CD.

    Here is the system:
    HP Pavilion a230n.
    AMD 2800+
    Athlon cpu,
    512 MB ram.
Getting no video. When the power button is pressed, the "on" light comes on, and stays on. The monitor immediately goes to power saving mode but this comes directly from the monitor. (e.g. It will display this with the computer power off and the monitor on).
Get a flash on mouse and keyboard. No beeps. Cannot shut off the computer. I have to unplug it.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

    Thanks in advance!

Dingo, have you tried clearing your CMOS? There may be a problem with your BIOS. I can suggest this:

Take PSU plug out of the computer and then take the case off and carefully take out the CPU battery, it is a small, silver disc directly on the motherboard. Now disconnect the power connector from the PSU to the Motherboard. Just place it on your table and wait for a minute or two. Put the battery back in and reconnect the PSU plug to the motherboard. Plug the power cable back into the rear chassis and try to start up again. Your BIOS should now have loaded default settings which should allow your computer to start normally. If it doesn't work, it can mean two things:

    1. Your RAM maybe faulty or is not being read (beep codes are critical at this point)
    2. Your motherboard may be dead

Afte much "playing around", and swapping parts, including the mother board, I figured out the problem.

It was the proccesser chip itself.

I replaced that, and have had no problems since.

    Go figure.

    Good luck!
