    Unhappy my pc keeps rebooting

im having tbjs problem, it started out i had windows 98se and it would work fine, then it started rebooting itself ever once in a while, and it would usually do it twice, then work for the rest of the day, then it started getting bad and started doing it lots i thought it might have been my video card because i was having video card problems too, but while i was in the middle of reinstalling the video card drivers, i was talking on msn, without ANY video related drivers or anything installed, the computer was in 16 color mode, it rebooted so me and my computer geek friend ruled out that it was VC related, it just kept doing it more and more so i thought maybe it was a virus, but i couldnt even keep the computer on long enough to finish a virus scan, so i formatted the hard drive and installed windows xp and it worked fine the first day, but it still rebooted itself every once in while and now its so bad i cant even get passed the windows xp loading screen, as soon as the loading screen appears the comp reboots, my dad seems to think theres a crack or something on the motherboard, but i inspected the motheboard everywhere and didnt see any problems, i think its either a power source problem or my hard drive, but im not sure i really wanna find out what the problem is. my hardware spec is

p3 1.0ghz (duel processor motherboard with only one processor)
    512ddr ram
    geforce fx 5200 VC
    40gb western digital hard drive
    now windows XP

if anyone has any ideas please email me at MZTKL@hotmail.com (not case sensitive)

i think you're on the right track.

here is a drive diagnostic from western digital: (you can download & then create a bootable floppy to test your drives)

The Diagnostics utility allows you to test the drive, print results for last drive tested, repair errors found during the Test Drive option and write zeros to the drive. To use this utility, please download the file to your computer. If using the ZIP version of the file, then next unzip the utility. Finally, just run the program "DLGDiagv504c.exe" which will walk you through the steps to create a bootable diagnostic diskette.

thanks ill give it a try, but right now im thinking its my video card, because i took the ram out, and booted it up with each individual chip, and it still rebooted, so its not ram, then i took out the video card and put another one in, and the new video card i put in wouldnt work for some reason, but it didnt reboot the computer either but i also couldnt see if it even tried loading windows because the video card wasnt working, then i put the old video card back in, and the fan on the card geforce fx 5200 started making some weird noise, dads gonna kill me lol

I was just about to suggest the same thing Jephree But, as you've already covered that, I'll think about the video card instead.......

I don't suppose you've got on-board video as well as the GeForce card have you? I assume you haven't as you didn't mention it but it was just a thought that might point to an incompatibility.

no it doesnt have onboard video, we came to a conclusion that it was a fixture of power source and hard drive, windows installation ****ed up part way thru and it caused errors i guess because i put the HDD in a different comp and it did the same thing, then like a day later the power source died, so we know whats the matter, thnx for your guy's help i formatted and installed windows again and its running fine on my other computer
