    laptop will not boot

    Hi there
can anyone help me, i have a HP pavilion ze4130 laptop which will not boot up. Whenever I press the start button, the blue "on light" lights up, the fan comes on but only for a split second then goes off again, this happens twenty times (I have counted them) then the blue light stays on but nothing else happens.

    Any help would be welcome.

    Many thanks

If you're trying to power it from the mains electricity, try removing the battery. If that doesn't help, plug the battery back in and disconnect the mains power supply. See if it will boot from the battery (assuming it's got a little bit of charge in it).

This will tell you whether the battery or power supply is at fault, or whether it's something else. Let us know

    Hi DJNafey
    thanks for showing an interest
battery is fully charged, tried both your ideas, still the same problem. Tried changing memory from one slot to another, tried pressing reset button on bottom of laptop, still the same

hope you get this reply, still new to this, not sure of forum yet

    thanks

Most members set up their forum account so that they are instantly emailed whenever there's a response to a thread that they've commented in

It's a shame that that didn't sort it out as the external power supply unit (PSU) and the battery are the easiest things to change. Try unplugging the battery and external PSU and then hold down the power button for 30 seconds. That's another 'reset' method that some manufacturers use. Then re-connect the battery and external PSU and see if it works.

Sounds identical to a problem I had with a Sony laptop last year. I ended up having to send it back to Sony and they found that some soldering between the internal power supply and the motherboard had got broken - they had to re-solder it. Fortunately, their out-of-warranty repair charge was surprisingly reasonable.

Another quick thing to try might be disconnect all of the drives, i.e. floppy drive, CD/DVD drive and hard disk, whether internal or external. It might be that those are doing something obscure to the power that's stopping it from being able to get through the BIOS checks.

Failing that, it could be a job for HP

Let us know how you get on

Sorry we couldn't help - looks like a hardware fault that will need to be repaired by a qualified laptop technician.
