CD Drive not working

CD Drive not working
I have been playing around in my PC, adding USB card etc in PCI slot. Anyway cut a long story short I was getting compatibility issues that affected the display, removed the card and the display came OK.
However now I can't load the CD drive. The door opens and closes, but if in windows I double click D: drive it says something like cannot access drive.
I am really stuck now because as far as I am concerned the PC is back to how it was initially.
Can someone please help me with ideas what to do next ?
P.S. The PC is fairly old running Windows 98SE on a Cyrix II 150Hz system. The CD Rom drive is a 44speed device (I don't have any drivers for this)

welcome to dal the online computer help forum
some questions:
what make of cd drive?
what is the exact error message?
did you remove or touch any leads when removing usb card?

Your problem with the grpahics lies in the speed of your USB PCI card. If its a brand new USB 2.0 card, then the PCI bus speed of the card will be the 2.2 verison, where as your motherbroad will probably be the 1.0 verision. Therefore you need to find a retialer that stocks a USB 1.0 PCI card, NOT - USB 1.1 or 2.0, they will lead you straight back to square one!!!!!
9best place to check is somewhere like Maplin Electronics - www.maplin.co.uk , it might be slightly expensive, but that due to it been an old part, and I'll or no demand for them).
As for your CD-ROM -

Failing that make sure there's no cracks / breaks in the cable. And make sure the cable is fully connected to both the motherboard and all the devices on it.

No probs spud.
Wouldn't supprise me. As I recently overhawled a PC for a mate, and I broke a brand new cable without trying
!!??!!
Anyways, its probably cheeper in the long run to overhawl the whole machine. It what, about £150 to build a PC to a meduim spec, and now it only cost about £400 - £450 to build a tip top 64bit system.

I managed to get the machine working by combination of following :
a) Basically tried another CD drive from another machine
b) Rebooted the machine and pressed the "END" button on keyboard as apparently this resets the BIOS (luckily I found the motherboard booklet yesterday which suggested this if there were BIOS issues)
c) Refitted the USB card again re-booted pressing "END"
PC now working fine, managed to connect me daughters camera to it to download here photos so she is happy.
Thanks for your help
P.S. No problem with the leads.
