The Netgear FA511 is a 10/100 network card. Are you trying to connect it to a cable (broadband) router for your Internet connection? Or are you somehow connecting it directly to a standard telephone socket?

You say that you have installed it after Windows detected it (through Plug 'n' Play when you rebooted). If you right-click on My Computer and go to the Devices tab, does the Netgear FA511 appear in the list of network adapters. If you check the Properties of it, does it say that the 'device is installed and working correctly' or something else?

The wizard that opens when you run Internet Explorer sounds like the Internet Connection Wizard. That will appear if you haven't set up an Internet connection on that laptop before.
