Universal Serial Bus Problems

    Question Universal Serial Bus Problems

My computer does not recognize any device plugged into the USB port. It tells me that it may have been turned off in the BIOS, so I'm thinking about upgrading the BIOS system with a BIOS driver Upgrade from Gateway. But I don't really want to do so. Is there like a driver or something that I could get for my USB port? I have Everest and it says that my USB settings are:

    USB Device Properties:

driver description: INTEL 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
    driver date: 06/08/2000
    driver provider: Microsoft
    INF File: USB.INF
    Hardware ID: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_7112&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_01,PCI\V EN_8086&...

    Bus Type: PCI
    Bus/Device/Function: 0/7/2
    Device ID: 806-7112
    Subsystem ID: 0000-0000
    Device Class: 0C03 (USB Controller)
    Revision: 01
    Fast Back-to-Back Transactions: Not Supported

    USB Device Features:

    66 MHz Operation: Not Supported
    Bus Mastering: Disabled

    USB Device Resources:

    IRQ: 00
    Port: 1060-107F

    USB Device Status:

The NTKERN.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver. (code 2)
To fix this, click update driver to update the device driver.

Well, That's just about all the information I can dig up on this device. The last part of the USB Information (the device status) came from the Hardware/Device Manager thing in My Computer. When I try to update the drivers, the computer tells me it is missing a .dll file and that it needs the disk labeled Windows Millenium Edition. However, that can't be done because I don't have a disk and I don't have a working cd-rom drive. So if anyone has any ideas about ways to help me would be great. Thanks a bunch!

Okay, whoa. It's taken me a while to get back to fixing this problem, but I just downloaded the hotplug.dll driver, and then I tried to update the USB Driver, but when I did so, it still told me that I did not have that file. So I searched for the file in the provided file searcher program, and it finds two of those drivers hotplug.dll!!! What the crap?! A person I know that knows quite a bit about computers advised me to just reinstall the BIOS. Is this a good idea? I actually tried to do so downloading the BIOS drivers from Gateway's website, my computer's manufacturer, but when I tried to reinstall it, it wouldn't work. It said my ntldr or something like that wasn't working. What do I do? Any ideas?

Wait, I got it to find the hotplug.dll file. But the driver update is still incomplete. It can't find the file or driver: usbd.sys. Where can I get it? I searched my computer for it, but it couldn't be found.

Well, guys...I don't have a workable cd-drive, thus extracting the files from the disk will not help. The cd drive that came with my computer has become completely worthless, as in we took it to some computer place where it was and declared unusable. So, now I have an external cd drive connected to my computer through the USB port. So, what should I do? I fixed one of the USB port conflicts, but the USB root hub is still unusable. I found all the files for it, but it still tells me that the NTKERN.VXD device loaders for the device could not load the device. What to do? There are a couple of other devices that aren't working sufficiently on my computer as weel, and finding all the necessary files did not fix the problem. They all have the same type of problem I ascribed for the USB root hub. In case you're wondering, those other devices are: Xircom WDM communication device, the MPU-401 compatible MIDI device, Primary IDE controller (dual fifo), and the Standard Floppy Disk Controller. Are any of these necessary to the operation of the USB port? Or are they isolated problems in and of themselves? Please respond back.
