Blue Screen of... oopsieee!
I was enjoying a nice gaming session of EverQuest 2 last night just before I tried to exit the game to go to bed. The computer froze while trying to exit. I think I can safely assume it was because my computer has such low memory. I notice that the longer I play EQ2 without rebooting the more lag or slow it gets. Anyway, this was the first time it had ever actually frozen when trying to exit the game (or play it for that matter). It was also a very long gaming session.
My computer has Windows XP Home Edition O/S, 512memory, and 2.6Ghz pentium processor (it is a Dell computer).
Now to the issue at hand:
This morning when I tried to turn on the computer (after manually having to shut down on the night prior), after loading the initial black windows screen, it went straight to a blue screen with the error "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME." I couldn't find any explanations in the manual that came with the Dell computer, so I tried a google search and came across an article at: <http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q297185>
I don't even know what a UDMA hard disk controller is, so I assumed it was a "Damaged File System" and tried to follow the steps towards fixing the problem as shown at the aforementioned site. I had to download and create a Windows Startup Disk because I couldn't find any laying around. Unfortunately, when I turn on the computer with the disk in the floppy drive, all that happens is I get an annoying A:\> line on a black screen below the word "starting..." According to the troubleshooting website, a "Welcome to Setup" screen should appear. It does not.
There is, however, one indication that the problem may not be the result of a "Damaged File System." It states in the problem description found on the website, "If the second parameter (Oxbbbbbbbb) of the Stop error is 0x00000032, then the file is damaged." The second parameter of the Stop error shown on my computer is not OxOOOOOO32.
The following is the "Technical information" shown on my computer screen at the bottom of the blue screen:
Technical information:
*** STOP: OxOOOOOOED (Ox82FE3900, OxCOOOOOO6, OxOOOOOOOO,OxOOOOOOOO)
I feel visiting a forum, such as this, is the best course of action at this point in time. There's only so much helpful research I can do without any real direction. If anyone can help me, please do so as soon as possible. I'm also a college student taking one of my courses online. Not having a properly functioning computer isn't an option for me...
Thank-you very much!

That is basically the exact same message as the one in the url I provided. It doesn't help at all... thanks, though

I've just followed the link that Spud gave you this morning and it definitely the right Microsoft article for the error message and STOP error number that you've got on your PC.
You do have a UDMA hard disk controller so I think you need to follow those suggestions rather than working on the basis that you might have a damaged file system. You can rule out the first suggestion, which is that you might have the wrong type of IDE cable fitted, because you haven't changed it and it worked OK previously. So that just leaves the second suggestion in the Microsoft article: go into the BIOS (usually tells you on the screen to press F1, F2, Enter, etc to enter system setup when you first switch on the PC). Once in the BIOS, reset it to the factory default settings. Exit the BIOS, reboot and let us know if it does or doesn't work

thanks for the back up dj

I fixed it... I just had to repair the hard drive (using the original O/S installation CD) and rewrite the boot.ini file (it was corrupt somehow).

Oh OK - well done
