Are you trying to install an OS on this drive or are you using , say XP, to try and access this new drive?

I'm assuming the drive has no existing partitions on it?

The drive is partitioned and I have been trying to install an OS on it. I have tried to install Win98 with no joy. It hangs when setting the hardware after installing. Then I tried XP. On rebooting it gives me a "missing operating system"!

Sounds like the drive parameters are wrong in the BIOS. Click the links in my signature for articles on how to auto-detect your new hard disk and how to manually set it up if it doesn't work automatically.

whats the make/model of the HD ? .. all the major mfgrs have utilities for testing their drives , that is of course if it's properly setup in bios as stated by djnafey

Do not forget that Fdisk was updated for Win98Se after release to address more than 8 gig. Had that issue with my 98se system awhile ago.

    Here is one article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;263044
    (Deals with 64gb drives)

Before I upgraded my Fdisk to the one in this Article, I couldnt get more than 8gig on one of my 20gig drives at the time. After replacing the Fdisk I was able to partition to a full 18.xx gig drive (the full drive)

This is a suggestion that worked for me.
