Hello again,

A friend of mine has a HP laptop and recently the keyboard and touchpad thingy doesn't work. The power button works and it gets to the login screen but we cant do anything because the keyboard doesn't do anything. He has an external mouse this doesn't work either we cant enter bios or the windows setup screen, although when pressing the power button the computer shuts down fine. I've Googled the query and can't seem to come up with anything and other problems on this forum seem to be similar but other users seem to have some control. I'm going to try my external ps2 keyboard and I'll let you know how we get on, but by posting this maybe someone will recognise the symptoms, it has no floppy drive so xp recovery discs are no good, anyway when it says press any key to boot from cdrom nothing happens and it goes straight to the login screen? Any suggestions peeps?

If the keyboard doesn't work during POST then there is no problem with the OS - so even if you could do a recovery it wouldn't help you. Sounds like something wrong with the keyboard itself. Like you say an external Keyboard will highlight whether the fitted keyboard itself is the problem or not....
