    mousey problem

hi everyone. does anyone know why a computer does not recognise its mouse. i'm trying to help a friend with a computer he bought (second hand) that for some reason does not recogise his mouse. we've tried a different mouse and that too doesn't work. i thought it might be mouse driver problems but since he's not connected to the internet i was wondering how i could get him some new drivers (if in fact that is the problem). the friends computer is quite old by modern standards and is just a machine for him to test the waters before he possibly buys a better one. but since we can't move the cursor around the screen we are quite stuck.
any help and suggestions would be most appreciated.
    thanks

Is it just a standard mouse, not optical? Does it come up with an error when you first start the computer saying there is no mouse connected?
All you can do is try a mouse you know works from another machine. Make sure there no dust in the socket and its plugged in the right place keyboard & mouse sockets look the same on some but wont work if theyre swapped. Otherwise it may be the connection on the motherboard.
