wireless home network/printing issue
Main pc is dsl w/bellsouth. Have a linksys wireless router, originally so I could use my work laptop at home also. Now have another pc in another room in house, have it connected via wireless also. I only have 1 printer connected to main pc, an hp4000 connected via parallel port/lpt1. I've chose "share this printer" on both pc's, but the pc in other room can not find the printer?? Does the printer have to be connected to the router by ethernet in order for sharing? It only has a parallel connection on it. Please advise.
ps.. I am running Windows Xp on both pc's.

This laserjet, did it come with the jetdirect print server? If you look at the rear of the printer, you should see an ethernet port there
If so, the most efficient way would be, as you suggested to connect it using a straight through cat5 cable to the router
See this page on how to set it up and configure it

No, it did not come with the jet direct built in, but I have an external one that I borrowed from work to try and use when I used my work laptop, but I'm a little unsure as to how to use. I can tell I can connect the parallel cable to it, and from that connect with the cat5, but was unsure if after making those connections, what I do next. Will the pc's automatically see it after that, since it will be plugged into the router? Will I need to configure in any way? I'm not totally pc/network illiterate, but still get quite confused when trying to configure. I will go ahead and attach and see what happens, but any advice will be appreciated.
thanks

Once the Jet Direct Box is connected to the the router, it should automatically be assigned an IP address assuming that you have DHCP enabled on your network
Once you have done that, use the Printer setup wizard to browse for network printers

Just thought I'd let you know it worked!! Thanks for your advice.
I have another question now, about wireless stuff. Since I have the other pc connected via wireless, if the users are logged off, but the pc is still on, is there a chance security can be compromised? There is a lot of info out there indicating wireless is still not completely safe, but I have my firewalls turned on, virus/internet & email protection, run zone alarm on the main pc, etc. and I've been "assuming" that I'm ok to leave the pc on during the day as long as users are logged off. I have everything I can think of turned to highest security, but am still a little uneasy.
thanks again

Glad you're sorted on the printer front
As long as you have WEP enabled along with both your Hardware and Software firewalls enabled, you are relatively secure
There is no such thing as perfect security, but you should be able to sleep at night.
One suggestion I would make is that you follow Micro$ofts' advice here and set the MAIN administrators password to a strong one
