Sometimes (not all the time) I find when I try to disconnect from the internet and go to use the phone, I find the internet is still on and the only way to get rid of it is to turn off the computer. AOL is not on the screen though.

yeah i used to have that same problem when i had aol. what i used to do was press ctr+alt+del and go under processes and find something with aol in it. then hit end process.
