internet problems
hi guys and gals
Yesterday I decided to connect my laptop in my room to my rooter using a cat 6 ethernet cable. After connecting the internet and surfing without problems, the internet stopped working. I had a signal but there was no internet connection (it showed a yellow warning sign). The other people using the internet also lost the internet - caused much grief.
To try and remedy to fault i restarted the router, which changed nothing and i then removed the cat 6 cable and restarted to no result. After around 10 - 30 mins the internet returned and is now working fine. What i really want to know is a) was the problem my fault? b) if so, how to fix it?
I know this will probs be in wrong place but im new so cut some slack
im using a linkseys wireless router if it helps

Hi honeymonster199
I think we've all have had similar experiences to yours.
Usually a reboot is all that's needed to correct it and sometimes a system restart.
But I don't think its anything you did and unless its a constantly occurring problem
I wouldn't worry about.
Please post back if the problem occurs on a regualr basis. ie several times a day
Otherwise happy and safe surfing

I have moved this thread to Firewalls and Networks.
I agree with Jim and it is not likely it was anything you did, unless you pulled and stressed the cable between your router and the device serving as your Internet gateway (typically a cable/DSL modem), or the connection coming into the modem. Ethernet cables are not very robust and can not endure much abuse. If it happens again (since it took all connected devices out) that's the cable I would look at first, then the connection coming into the modem.
Note that most factory made cables are not the best quality either. Investing in a quality crimper, a box of RJ-45 CAT-6 grade connectors, a roll of bulk cable and a cable tester can be a great investment over time - once you get the hang of it (it does take some practice). Then, for example, you can build a 2 foot cable to connect the modem to the router, if you want, instead of using a factory made 6 ft cable. If you need a 13 foot cable to your computer, you can build one instead of using a 25 foot factory made cable.
At least consider buying a cable tester. They are great for keeping your blood pressure stable.
