Hi, I've installed a brand new Netgear DGN2000 wireless-N modem router and can only access the internet via the ethernet cable. I've been trying on a daily basis to find out what the problem is via the Netgear and Toshiba, my laptop manufacturer. Both have been helpful but I've not had any success. The concensus from both is that it is the laptop's WIFI card driver. At Toshiba's suggestion I've deinstalled and reinstalled the driver (Realtek) and then tried to locate the wireless network. Still can't do it. When I try to set up a wireless router or access point, no hardware or network settings can be detected and my option is to set this up manually. I've gone through the router setup after the log on and everything is there as I've gone through this when I first contacted netgear. I'm beginning to get a little frustrated by this problem and would like any help I can get. One other thing I've tried and failed to do is going into the services and start WLAN AutoConfig Automatic. I get the error message:
"Windows could not start the WLAN Autoconfig service on the local computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start". I've seen on other problems this message and the response was to go in the registry and change one of the lines which I'm not really happy to do. I'm not computer phobic but don't want to mess around at this level.
I hope this gives someone enough clues to be able to offer some help - it would be really appreciated! I bought this router a week ago and still only able to use it as I did with my old adsl filter so not much progress achieved in 7 days!
Welcome to D-A-L,
Are you attempting to setup a Wireless Network between two computers? Please read my signature and post back with all the information asked so we can assist you further?
In the meantime here is How to setup a Wireless Network at home
kind regards,
At the moment, I am just trying to get one laptop to work wireless but expect other laptops to connect at various times in the future.
My laptop is a Toshiba P300-14P approx 18mths old
O/S Windows Vista Home Premium (32bit) SP2
Intel Pentium Dual CPU T2370 @ 1.73 GHz 1.73 GHz
RAM 2 GB
Network Adapter is Realtek RTL8187B Wireless 802.11b/g 54Mbps USB 2.0 (Toshiba recommended deinstalling and rebooting but was still unable to locate the wireless network)
Netgear Wireless-N Modem Router DGN2000
Have followed all the instructions supplied with router for installation. All the settings were gained automatically, apart from my own SSID and passphrase which I created manually.
Netgear have suggested going into services, locating the WLAN AutoConfig Automatic Start up and selecting Start. When I've tried to do this I get the error message:
"Windows could not start the WLAN Autoconfig service on the local computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start". In the Wireless Settings (from the Router login) I have selected Enable Wireless Access Point and Allow Broadcast of the Name (SSID) within the section entitled Wireless Access Point.
My laptop's wireless 'beacon' light on the front is lit, as is the one on the router/modem but in Network and Sharing I cannot set up a wireless router or access point. It fails to detect anything and requests a manual set up which I try and then it just takes me into the router set up which is, as far as I can tell, correct. So therefore, the only way I can access the internet with my laptop is by using the ethernet cable into the router.
I hope I've given you enough to be helpful. In the meantime I shall try How To you provided which I have just printed out.
One final thing, Toshiba have suggested a full product recovery with the discs I had created at the time of purchase, but I'm not 100% sure that this will actually solve the problem.
Many thanks!
Tried out the How To and wireless still not working. Thanks.
Not really understanding why you want this stress when you are on the net with at this stage only the one computer. My suggestion would be wait until you have the second computer to configure the Wireless and sharing connection. At the moment, I am just trying to get one laptop to work wireless but expect other laptops to connect at various times in the future.
Again google is your best friend so I have noted these links for your further research.
How to setup a Wireless Network using Windows Vista Home Premium
WLAN Autoconfig service on a local computer: Error 1068
kind regards,
I'm getting stressed because the whole point of going wireless was because I wanted to use my laptop in other rooms in the house for convenience. A second laptop was able to connect to the wireless network successfully so I am guessing that there is something wrong with my laptop. Toshiba have come back and said that if the second laptop connected to the wireless network successfully that the recovery was probably the next step.
I don't want to only be able to use my laptop with it connected via an ethernet cable, if I wanted to work this way I wouldn't have gone to the expense of buying a modem/router with enough power to be able to use my laptop in the garden.
Thanks anyway.
OK, so now I have checked out the router/modem with a second laptop and it picked up the network and logged on successfully. In fact it picked up a stack of other networks in the vacinity whereas my laptop detected none. Does this help? Thanks.
Have you changed the wireless network card on your Laptop to make sure it is working for you?
Would also suggest you do D-A-L's Hardware Scan to see if there is a problem there.
kind regards,
