My network seems to have developed a small problem. When the laptop log onto the network via wireless both the laptop and PC become very slow. THey stop connecting to web pages, however the network just says its connected to the internet. Both computers are only 4 months old, the router is about a year old.
I probably just need to adjust some settings(i hope).

So you don't have a slow connect on the desktop when the laptop is disconnected? Have you tried it with the laptop connected by itself? Have you tried a wired connection to the router from the laptop? Have you tried connecting the laptop directly into the modem? You will have to disconnect the router & unplug the power from the modem for a few minutes before connecting the laptop. Have you tried contacting your ISP to see if it is something on their end? Perhaps they would be nice enough to send someone out. We need more information on the systems especially the operating systems as well as the router. Also are you having any other problems with the laptop? Any popups or erratic behavior on or off the net? What kind of internet connection do you have? I suggest that you run a Speed test from your desktop with the laptop disconnected if your desktop has no problems when the laptop is disconnected. Post back the results of the test, the results of my suggestions, & your system information.

the desktop : Acer Aspire X1700 with Windows Vista Home Premium

the laptop : Dell Inspiron 15z laptop with Windows Vista Home Basic

I haven't bothered contacting the ISP, if either computer is plugged directly into the modem they both work fine, but i can give them a call if you still think its woth it?

The speed test came back normal, although I did try one a few days ago with the laptop still on the network and that came back normal too, it just took a few trys to get it to work. Theres no other problems with the laptop I can find. Yesterday i reset the router to factory defaults and upgraded to firmware to see if it helped, but it didnt.

In addition, arre you trying to do any kind of file sharing between the computers? If so I recommend that you try with file sharing disabled.

Hi, sorry for delay, been at work alot.

Thats correct, the desktop work fine when connected to router as long as the laptop isnt switched on.

The laptop still has problems even when desktop is switched off.

I tried the wired connection to the laptop and it wouldn't connect properly. It seemed to connect to the network, then find another somehow and connect to that, over and over. The wireless feature had been switched off.

There is no other problems with the laptop that i have noticed what so ever. Its only really used for web browser and has minimul software installed.

I have a 10mb cable connection.

If you could borrow another router I would try that. Do you have a way to connect the laptop to another network.

I'm kind of confused as to what the cause is. A good connection to the modem only, seems to indicate that the laptop's wired connection is good so that makes it look like the router since it doesn't work wired/wireless on the router. Yet no problems on the desktop unless the laptop is connected makes it look like either the laptop or an overload on the router (except that the laptop also has problems when it is connected by itself). Is that correct?

It could also be your settings. Make sure that both computers are set for static ip addressing. You need to also make sure that the router is set up to be used as a dhcp server. See your manual. Thats all I can think of. Sorry.
