Wired Tower and Wireless Laptops problem

    Hi All,

This seems like it should be quite simple but I'm obviously missing the bleedin' obvious!

    I have a Netgear DG834Gv4 ADSL2+ modem/router.
I have my tower connected by ethernet and two laptops by wireless.

But, at the moment I cannot 'connect' to the internet via the tower yet it shows on Network Connections as connected!
I am writing this on one of the laptops.
The network icon at the bottom right of the tower monitor says status: connected and speed: 100.0 MBS but all I get is the message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" on my browser page. I try the Diagnose Connection Problems and every time it tells me I have a Winsock catalogue problem which it will fix. No change though.
I have restarted both the tower and the modem/router.
I can't even connect to the modem/router to check settings.
But as I say, no problems with wireless.
The tower was working fine earlier.

It is running XP pro sp2 and I have just changed to (paid for) Kaspersky av and thought I'd just use the modem/router firewall (when I can figure out how to set it up!) instead of avast and comodo pro firewall (too many pop ups and unable to detect/remove Swizzor-Kaspersky is finding a derivative).

It is now 3:20 am and I just cannot find anything via google that seems to equate.

    Folks, anyone able to help?
Like I say, all was working fine till I came home from work this evening (11pm!).
I have a firmware update on memory stick for the modem/router but as I say cannot access the modem/router via the browser but don't know whether it is a problem anyway.

    Sorry for the lengthy post.

Any assistance will be sincerely appreciated.

    Cheers all,

    Gary.

Had you tried to install the update at all before the connection problems? If so that could be why you are having problems. Don't try to install it now. On any computer successfully connected to your router (wired or wireless) you should be able to access the administration page. With a netgear router the website is routerlogin.com. The defualt login info is as follows. I'm putting this in case you have never used the administration page or if the only time you have done is when you set up your system with the cd that came with it.
    user: admin
password: password [lower case, exactly like this]
If you can't connect to the internet through a browser but it says that you are connect then you aren't getting a valid IP address. If you have a valid connection to your router then under the router administrator page when you click attached devices it should list that computer. Has your desktop ever been able to connect to the router? If so what have you done to the computer since your last successful connection. Is the modem built into the router or is it a separate unit? If it is not built into the router I need you to try to connect the desktop directly to the modem for troubleshooting. Unplug the power from the modem & leave it unplugged for at least a minute. While waiting you can disconnect your router from the modem, your desktop from the router & plug the computer into the modem. After a minute reconnect the power to the modem. If your desktop still won't connect to the internet then your desktop is mis configured. No reconnect eh router you just reverse the steps making sure to disconnect the power from the modem for at least a minute. You can also try to connect the desktop to different ports on the router if you haven't done so. Get back to me with specifics after you try these troubleshooting steps & with the answers to my questions & we can go from there.

On more question: do you have xp on the desktop? If not then what?

Hi townsbg, thanks for the interest.
I'll try to answer your queries as best I can.
I have not installed the modem/router(all in one) firmware update.
I installed the modem/router two days ago and I was able to access the modem/router admin page via my tower(desktop) pc. With the desktop I set up the security (it works!) for wireless connection. All worked fine.
Also, as I was getting lots of pop-ups before connecting the Netgear I decided to uninstall Avast and Comodo pro and am now running Kaspersky A-V (paid for) and intended to use the modem/router firewall.
I recently moved house and prior to the move suffered from the Swizzor trojan and couldn't get rid of it with Avast and it would'nt let me update Ad-Aware of Sbybot S&D but Kaspersky is flagging it up (as Trojan.Win32.Obfuscated.gen) in different files and allowing me to delete. I think it is still hovering but am confident it is under control. Ahem!
All was working fine on the desktop and wireless units till yesterday. There have been no amendments to any applications though I did try to install ZoneAlarm but it wouldn't get past 22% on three ocasions. So haven't bothered further.
I can access the modem/router admin page via the laptop I'm on now.
This is running Vista Home premium.
The desktop is XP pro sp2.
I have switched off and remade physical connections but will try again.
I did note that XP was unable to renew my IP Address.
But curently I can se in Netgear status Details that everything has a label/number apart from WINS server, what ever that is.

I hope this helps you help me.

    Cheers.

    Hi,

Just to advise I physically disconnected everything, reconnected (ethernet cable in different port on modem/router) and it (the desktop) is STILL not working! Wireless is working fine, as always.

I must admit to being very frustrated by it. I'm sure it must be something really basic and I cannot see for looking.

    Cheers.

Just because you're getting an ip address doesn't mean that you are getting a valid one. If you do have one then something is blocking access. On you desktop what address are you getting? What are you getting on your laptop? They should be mostly the same. Does your desktop show up under the attached devices tab? If it does than you do have a valid connection to the router so you have another problem. Is this a brand new router? Still under warranty?

It looks like you are talking about malware issues. I can't help you on that [they won't let me]. All I can say on that is to go start a thread in the malware section. That is where they take care of that. Only approved users can help users there.

    Eureka!

It's working! I'm using it now.

For some eerie reason I was drawn to 'Add/Remove Programmes' and found some "Windows Live" stuff that I hadn't put on (though one of the 'kids' might have!). One of these also had a 'CiD' addition which was a name I recognise flashing up as the the pop-ups loaded (url?).
I have removed most of these (left Live Messenger for daughter) and...Here I am!
So not sure how you would classify the problem (a massive pain perhaps?!) as it would appear to have come from a legitimate source but I know it ain't coming back.

So sorry to have wasted your time, townsbg.
Thanks so much for that time and kind assistance.

    Cheers,

    Gary.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
Its no time wasted. Glad you where able to figure it out. I know how it is when you can't get something to work on your computer. I searched that on the web & I came up with a link to a forum. Its interesting to read. Based on what I read you still might want to go to our malware forum & create a thread there. Tell them all about this & they will help you make sure that nothing else is on your computer that you don't want to be. Just because you're connected to the internet doesn't mean that you still don't have a problem. As I've stated malware issues (even the possiblilty of) are best handled there & I can't help you on them at all b/c I don't want to get in trouble with the moderators. Do you understand that? You still might have a problem but only they can tell you for sure. This is very important.
