    what am I doing wrong

a few years ago my husbands friend came and connected my sons windows xp computer to our windows xp computer using some sort of wireless usb connection thing
we have now got a new computer with windows vista and have invested in a belkin router
I managed to set that up yesterday but I can't get my sons computer to go on the internet
he has a wireless usb connection that plugs straight into the usb port
but it just keeps saying that windows can't configure it
I have tried uninstalling it and putting it back on
the man in the shop said it should have been straightforward , I install the router , name it and then when I go upstairs my sons computer should pick it up I click on the name I've given it and away we go but its not working
I think its something silly I've done wrong but I don't know what
    any ideas ???

It is a high probability that the USB Wireless Dongle in your sons computer isn't compatible with your network as it is a few years old. Networking standards have changed in that time. If you have any details on the Wireless USB Dongle in your sons PC like make and model then I can have a look and check the compatibility for you if you give me your router model. It is also possible to change the settings of your network so that it uses an older version of Wifi, but this would mean the router isn't performing at its maximum speed and potential.
