WinXP Gateway > Wireless Router > Laptop???

I have a unique home network maybe, 1st I'll give some details...

    Broadband Modem: D-Link DCM-202

Main PC/Gateway (not the brand)/Personal PC

    Aopen AX4SPE i865 chipset
    P4 3.0E 1MB Cache *Hyper Threading (disabled)*
    2 GB (2 x 1GB) DDR C3 Corsair Value Ram
    Nvidia GeForce 6600GT 128mb DDR3 (AGP 8x)
    WD3200JB 320GB HD 7200 RPM
D-Link DFE-530TX+ PCI Adapter (Connected to Broadband Modem)
Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC (Onboard) (Connected to 3Com 16port)
Sound Blaster Audigy 24-bit (Slightly Annoying!!!)

    3Com 16-port 10mb hub/switch (10mb for internet sharing more than 5 pc's)
**had a 100mb hub 4 port & that just sucked the bandwidth to all the other pc's**

D-Link WBR-1310 Wireless G Router *(disabled almost everything)*

5 random other pc's connected (Atleast)

Ok, so now the story... My daughter & wife love to be on the pc ALL the time... I enjoy my PC after work... I also work on all sorts of machines randomly, laptops, home PC's etc... Thus wireless internet is very convenient. So I decided to add to my network...

Knowing a router is controlling the IP's, I disabled nearly everything to attempted to make this idea work. I've put the Wireless before the 3Com at a few attempts... No good wiring setup seems to make it click... I'm not a network genius, but as you can see, I'm not a complete idiot, other than making my main PC the gateway... But seeing I am the safest PC user, my PC will be the safest gateway... etc etc... easier to maintance 1 pc in my mind than 2...

Problem: The wireless refuses to connect even if I tell the router what IP's to use, & the laptop the same process... Anyways, I'm guessing I'm missing a good chunk of something...

Admendium: I prefer to be directly behind the modem... For gaming purposes as I've NEVER had any luck with routers + games (Warzone 2100 via Gamespy, also had odd issues with a Linksys router while using LIvVE *similar to Gamespy but more basic*)

    Thanx in advance,
    Stomp

Hopefully one of our network gurus will come along with some more constructive advice but I like the simplicity of using an "all-in-one" modem with wireless router such as this:

Anyway just an idea and again other members should be along.

I have Cable Internet unless that is Cable, but I only seen ADSL/DSL, that would be easier tho.

LONG time ago I was really into networking... lol I just never understood or had any luck with routers... I beleive their is a way to pass the Main IP to 1 pc... if I could figure that out, I'd be very well off... 'Til then lol :\

Thanx for posting that, is something to look for while I wait.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
I have also found this site to be very valuable for setting up modems and routers for specific ISPs and vendors:

    http://www.dslreports.com/faqnew

In the standard setup you configure your modem as a bridge then it basically transfer its functions to the router.
