    Linksys wrt54g ethernet problem

I've had this modem router for about a year and had no problems until a couple of days ago. Connections via the ethernet ports have suddenly stopped working. Sometimes when the router is first turned on it works OK, but then the connections fail: the PC says that a network cable is unplugged (it isn't) and the router can't be pinged. Wireless connections are unaffected.

It may be a co-incidence but there was a lightening storm overhead on the evening the problem started.

Have you any suggestions for investigating what's gone wrong? I'd try a factory reset, but if that didn't work I'd have lost the wireless connection too.

I think trying a factory reset would be a good idea and I don't think you would lose the wireless because if it is connected now, then obviously the wireless components within the router are working. A factory reset will change your network SSID, so your devices won't automatically reconnect to the router if you have manually changed your SSID. All this means is that you will have to search for the router and then connect using the default WPA/WEP key. If this doesn't apply to you, ignore it.

The lightening storm could be more than a coincidence, this could indeed be the problem. An electrical surge down your telephone line could have caused the problem with your ethernet ports.

Thanks for your reply. I tried the factory reset, but no change. This morning I discovered the Linksys technical support line (0800 026 1418). I called a spoke to a helpful an patient man who after some diagnostics decided that the router is not working and told me Linksys will replace it.

One last thing, probably not important. In my haste and anxiety last night I misrepresented my equipment. the model is actually WAG354G. Sorry.

Well it is really as I suspected, the lightening storm has a frazzled the thing. Good luck with your new router
