Workstation Service will not run
Hi all,
This is obviously my first post here, but I am posting because I was so impressed with the depth of knowledge on other posts I was reading while trying to fix my problem.
I am running a Windows 2003 based server and connecting to it on an XP SP2 machine via a VPN (2x NetGear Prosafe VPN Firewalls...FVS114). I have had this connection working before today. Yesterday I shutdown the computer and took to across town to the server to play with some difficult software that wasn't working quite right via the VPN. Well, apparently the motherboard battery is dead so the CMOS needed to be reset and now I cannot connect to a networked drive for the life of me. I have another computer running so I know that the VPN is alive and well.
In the event viewer I receive multiple errors with event ids of: 7001, 7023, and 3113 (but this is not a recurring one).
I went into the services.msc and saw that workstation has been stopped, but I cannot start it again. I get an error message that reads: "Could not start the workstation service on the local computer. Error 1005: The volume does not contain a file system. Please make sure that all required system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted."
I wanted to try "sfc /scannow" in the run dialog, but cannot here as my boss has misplaced the XP Pro CD.
Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Blimey, that's a weird one. Tough to Google for that 1005 error too - plenty of people want to give you lists of error codes but no actual explanation of how to fix it. Even Microsoft.com/support didn't bring up any help quickly.
Have you looked at the hard disk in the Disk Management MMC? Anything unusual there?
Have you run a Chkdsk against it?
I'm sorry to see that you've had no other replies so far but I guess everyone else has thought that it was a tricky one with no obvious place to start as well !
