Thumbs down New installed XP can't see other Workgroup Systems

I recently upgraded (actually clean installed) all my systems in my home network to XP. I also upgraded Virus protection with Kaspersky Internet Security Version 7.0. Each system behaves the same. When I click on the "My Network Places/Entire Network/Microsoft Windows Network" the common workgroup name shows up on all of them. However, if I click on the workgroup only the local system shows. None of the other systems show up in the File Explorer.

This does not improve if I disable Kaspersky so I don't think it is the firewall settings.

I have a Link Station on the network that would show the Samba public folders under Microsoft Windows Network. They do not show either, but I can map a network drive to each folder with out a problem.

I would appreciate any suggestions on what to look for to fix the problem.

Are all the computers configured with the same workgroup name? You can find your computers workgroup out by going to System settings in the Control Panel and Computer Name.

Yes, they are all in the same workgroup.

I'm now even more confused then before. I do not know of any change to any of the three systems and definitely not the LinkSystem network storage unit. Yesterday, the widows file manager now sees all the workgroup systems and the shared Samba drives. Today, the same is true.

My only guess is the Kaspersky software is updated automatically at boot up from the internet, and my XP systems are updated automatically from the internet during shutdown. An update of either one might have fixed the problem.

Windows workgroup networks are notoriously temperamental - sometimes you set them up and they work first time, sometimes they just don't. One of the key issues is that changes on a workgroup network can take a long time to update.

Now that we all install complex firewall / security suites, this complicates the matter even further as communications around the workgroup are usually blocked until we specifically add the network IP address range into the "trusted" zone on all of the firewalls.

Glad to hear it's running OK now though. I'll close the thread off but let a moderator know if the problem comes back and we'll re-open it
