Complete novice attempting wireless
Hi
I'm trying to set up a wireless network, but it's not going well!! I have one PC and one laptop - that is all i'll be using. So today, along with the laptop (which is new), i bought a router, which included a card for the laptop.
I've come to set up the router, and it says that i have to plug the network cable from my modem into the router, then attatch the cable that came with the router, to the modem. However, i don't appear to have a modem (so i'm presuming it's built in to my PC). All i have is an ethernet broadband connection, that runs into a little blue adapter thing with a USB connector on the other end, into theback of my PC. So i tried unplugging the ethernet connection, and conncting that to the router, then running the cable that came with the router, from the router, to the blue USB adapter, but this won't work.
So, do i now need to go out and buy an external modem to make it work? I've looked on the back of my PC, and next to where the USB plugs in is an ethernet port, but if i plug the broadband connection straight into that, it doesn't work, it needs to go through the USB port? So do i need a modem to make the router work?
And sorry if this sounds really thick!
*just remembered, im with ntl and get their cable tv too, as sometimes if the internet connection breaks, i have to turn the tv box off at the wall - if this has anything to do with anything?

on the back of your cable box do you have an ethernet socket?
your modem may be built into the cable tv box
what router have you got?

Maybe the info on this page may help you.

Thanks for your help!!
Ok, after checking the back of my set-top box, it did have an ethernet cable running into it, so i tried setting up the router to that, and it worked, so thanks a lot!!
The i came to install the card onto my new laptop (running vista). Now, when i installed the router driver on to my PC, i put the CD in, kept pressing next on the install wizard, and all was well (my PC is running XP). I went to do this on my laptop, and it gets as far as telling me what folder it is going to install it in - then i press next, it says it is carrying out the requested funcions, a progress bar appears, then after it ges to 100%, it just goes off and nothing else happens. If i press install again, it removes all the files it just installed, but when it's finished, a screen appears, saying 'the installation is now complete!?'. Then i'm left with a desktop icon that doesn't work.
I checked in the shop i bought it in, and just re-checked online on the manufacturer website and it says that my router (a Belkin F5D9230-4)is compatible for vista, but on both installation CD's, it says Widnows 98 SE, Me, 2000 and XP - no mention of Vista! So if it's compatible, how do i install the driver to get it to work?
