I have never used a cross over cable and was wonder how it worked? Do you just plug it in to your RJ-45 port? Do you need software? And how do you transfer the files when it is connected?
Also in the link above it says Cat 6 500Mhz what does that mean? Also how fast can you transfer files? What tells you how fast it can transfer?
I have tried using a home network to transfer files with my router but it did not seem to work.

Here is one tutorial:

Cat 6 is the fastest at the moment as far as I know.
I use a router myself. With a router you only need basic Ethernet cables. Again Cat 6 is the best. With a router you use the Windows Network Wizard to set up the machines.

That link might not have been for XP. Not sure.
Try the box:
Share this folder on the network
-
This is what I get after I applied:

It looks like its for XP.

Yes. The hand icon indicates the folder is open to share.
Can you see it from the other computer?

I don't have a crossover cable to test it. I just wanted to know ahead of time before I bought it. I don't have another Ethernet cable to test it now.
-
I'd suggest using the router.
What problem did you have there?

The other computers did not show up on the network.
