Internet not working on one computer only
Hi
I have three desktop computers connect by wire to a router and a laptop connected wirelessly. They all connect fine to the internet except for one desktop. It can still connect to shared files etc on the other computers but nothing on the internet. I've tried pinging a few websites which doesn't work with the web address but does work with the ip address. I then tried typing the ip address into internet explorer but that didn't work either. I've tried firefox which doesn't work any better, i can't even connect to the routers setup page (192.168.0.1). This only started a couple of weeks ago, before that it had been fine so i don't think any settings are wrong.
Any ideas?
Thanks

forgot to mention, i was using xp's firewall but it's now turned off so that shpuldn't affect the connection

what firewall are you using?
have you tried swapping cables into the router to eliminate cable/router problems?

was using xp's firewall but i turned it off to see if it was the problem so there is no firewall now.
i have tried swapping cables, no difference

You should only switch off a firewall as long as necessary to eliminate it as the cause of a problem. You should switch it back on now
I would suspect one of two causes:
1. The 'Default Gateway' for the network connection is incorrect;
2. The DNS server entry for the network connection is incorrect.
I appreciate that you've said it's only been happening for a couple of weeks and that you haven't knowingly changed any settings but these two might be set to auto-detect the settings from your router so that might have got messed up without your involvement.
I would suggest going to the Start Menu > Run and type cmd and click OK. This opens the Command Prompt window. Type ipconfig /all and press Enter. You should see a section listing details for your ethernet cabled network connection. Check the Default Gateway and DNS server entry and compare them to the same settings on one of the other cabled PCs.
Please let us know how you get on

thanks, the gateway and dns server is the same, 192.168.0.1, and i've tried setting the computers ip address manually and letting it get one automatically from the router, neither way works.

Try opening Internet Explorer and going to Tools > Internet Options. Go to the Connection tab and then click the LAN Settings button. Ensure that 'Automatically detect settings' is switched on.

yep it is
(btw thanks for the quick responses)

This is an unusual problem. If it was just a case that DNS names (URLs) didn't work, it would be so bad but, as you've said that IP addresses work from the command prompt but not through a browser, that's really weird.
I'm wondering whether it could be a spyware-related issue (particularly as you said it used to work OK). Try downloading Spybot Search & Destroy 1.5 (freeware) from www.spybot.info and run a full scan with it. Obviously, you'll have to do that from another PC and transfer the setup program on a USB drive, floppy disk, etc.
