Hope someone can help a beginner. My internal modem was disabled during a storm and the PC became pretty flaky, kept restarting etc.

Taking the modem card out has cured that and I bought a USB dial up modem instead. Have changed this at a friends house but we can not get a connection. No server found and similar messages. The new modem shows in device manager, with no error indication, states the driver is OK.

Main questions are:

Will a PC work like this, or does it have to have a card modem installed as well. I know that's probably illogical but did wonder.

The new modem will be operating on a different port, I think it said Com 4, do I need to change anything.

The house we are at has a broadband connection, does this stop you connecting via dial up.

Any advice would be really appreciated, in the hope we can get some kind of connection.

Having broadband at the house doesn't stop you using dial-up, providing that you have the modem cable connected to the phone socket through an ADSL microfilter.

It sounds initially like you need to go into your dial-up networking connection's properties and make sure that it is using the new modem. It might still be trying to use the old modem that you took out.

Other than that, I can think of no reason why a different 56k dial-up modem shouldn't be able to use the same ISP connection without any trouble.

This may be really helpful in future, although never did solve the question that led to the post. Couldn't get the PC connected but when I went home after the holiday, took two minutes to get working.
