installing additional router to home network

    Hi,

    Can someone help please....

I have a home network set up with my main pc connected to my netgear DG834G wireless router via ethernet, then my kids pc's are connected to this via wireless. the issue I have is that my sons pc is to far away form the router to get a decent connection.

I was wondering how would I connect another wireless router? I was going to connect it using a ethernet cable into my existing router, so that the new router can be fitted in his room and then he will be close to the router to get a good wireless connection to my home network.

I was told I would have to disable dhcp in the 2nd router , but are there any other issues? both routers would be DG834g's

    cheers

    Rog

    Hi Rog,

This suggestion sounds absolutely fine. You are correct in saying that you should disable DHCP on the second router though.

Also bear in mind that, out of the box, both routers will have the same IP address, which will cause a conflict. You'll need to connect to the second router and give it a different IP (make sure that it is one that isn't already assigned to a PC) before you connect the two routers together.

Also, because you are connecting two of the same kinds of device together (i.e. two routers), you might find that you need a crossover network cable rather than a standard 'straight' ethernet cable. There are crossover cables currently available on the D-A-L Trader site (www.d-a-l.com/trader).

An alternative that you might want to consider is to get a bigger aerial for the first router, if it is a model that has an external aerial (I know that a lot of the Netgears have them integrated). Most standard wireless router aerials have a 2.5dBi signal strength and you could probably get a 5dBi or 6dBi aerial for the same price as a second router.

    Hope that helps

    Hi there,

Many thanks you for your advice, I think my first attempt will be as you suggested by trying to set up the existing gear I've got...I guess i would need to make the ip address of the second router something far away from the 1st and other pcs? If the first is 192.168.0.1 and the pc's go up to 192.168.0.4 then the ip address of the second could be something like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.200.... would it be more preferable to change the 3rd number or just the 4th number? I will consider the crossover lead you mentioned too.

If I dont get much joy this way then hopefully a larger antenna will do the job... currently its a small white one on the back about 100mm... but as I already have a second router the initial option would work out the cheapest

    thanks again

It gets more complicated if you change the third octet of the IP address, e.g. 192.168.1.1, as you'll end up with two different networks - some PCs on the 192.168.0 network and some PCs on the 192.168.1 network. I think that your suggestion of 192.168.0.200 sounds ideal - not only is it far away from the range used by the other PCs but it is also easy to remember and, when working with lots of different addresses, it's easy to get yourself confused if your router addresses aren't easy to remember!
