AOL has already mapped over 1200 cities in US, and some portion of Canada, trying to determine the location of as many wireless routers as possible. Using a fleet of trucks equipped with GPS technology, and equipment to pickup the “MAC” address signal broadcasted by each wireless router. The “MAC” information is the same information that is also sent all over internet, every time a user has activity on Internet (including being on AIM). AOL has/is capturing the information by driving from neighborhood to neighborhood, and mapping the whole area. Initially, it is offering a service (with the user permission) to allow the users on AIM to find out if any of people on the “buddy” list live close to each other. I am sure AOL has some other big plans for the data that it has/is collecting (such as targeted advertising-for example by knowing where you live, it can stream a coupon for the nearby Pizza place). The big brother is indeed watching you!
