Go to Tools, Internet Options, Connections, Lan Settings, verify Automatically Detect Settings is checked. If that is thru, get into you wireless card in you laptop, click Properties, Highlight Internet Protocal and right click. Press Properties. Verify Obtain and IP Address Automatically is checked. Then click Alternate Configuration on the top. Select User Defined. Under IP Address, enter an IP address that your router supports. Then enter the Subnet Mask same as that of your router. Then for Default GateWay, enter the IP address of your router.

Connect your laptop directly to the router via the LAN port on your laptop and one of the LAN port on the router. By now you should know what the IP address of your router is. In your laptop, click start, click run, in the window that is opened enter"CMD", press enter. Then in the dos commond mode, type in the IP address of your router (it should be something like 192.168.1.1 yours might be different). press enter. This is called PINGIN your router. If your laptop gets a response from the router, it should get four lines of replys with something like, bytes=32, time less that 1 ms, TTL=64 on all four lines. If that is the case, the LAN port of your taptop is set properly. If not, get into to the LAN card of your desktop and rightdown all infomation (IP add, Subnet mask, and gateway). Put those in your laptop LAN card, except that change the IP address of the laptop by one from that of desktop. If your laptop can not talk to router via its LAN, your browser may not be set correclty. Once you make laptop work on LAN via direct connection to router, then you start working on the wireless card on your laptop the same way. I am assuming that the wireless of your router is on, it is broadcasting SSID, you can see it on your laptop, and you set the security of your laptop the same as that of the route (entring WEP key or WPA passworld, tec). When you right back, the more information you give about what you did the better I or somebody else can assist you. If you just say I did everything you told me, that is not going to help that much. Because nobody can tell what you really did. Say the step-by-step of what you did and what you got in response. That way the problem can be pin pointed. Good luck.

Ok. If your laptop can not connect to the internet via direct connection to router, then it is not going to work wirelessly. I assume that you first when to your desk top, used your desktop and from that found out what the ip address of your router is. Then on your laptop when you clicked run and typed CMD you type "PING" before the ip address of your laptop. Is that right? You should have gotten some "timed out" messages. By the way, what is the IP address of your router? What is the IP address of your desktop? What is the IP address of the gateway in your desktop? What is the LAN subnet mask?
At this point, my suggestion is that to use the cable that plugs into your desktop and temporarily plug that into the LAN portion of your laptop. If you can not connect, normally the LAN card in the laptop must be set properly. There are a few things that you have to check again.
On your laptop, click "START", click "CONNECT TO", click "SHOW ALL CNNECTION". Right click on "LOCAL AREA CONNECTION", click "PRPPERTIES".
Verify "CLIENT FOR MICROSOFT NETWORKS" is checked.
Arrow down get to "INTERNT PROTOCOL (TCP/IP). Highlight that. Right click on it. Click "PROPERTIES". Under "GENERAL" "OBTAIN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY" should be check.
In the same window, click "ADVACE", click "WINS", "NETBIOS SETTING" should be on default.
Now if that does not work, temporarily disable your firewall. If you have another firewall disable it too.
Remember first step is to make laptop work off of its LAN port directly connected to your router. When that works, then you can work on wireless.

do you have a a msn or something so we can make this easier cause i dont know how to disable firewalls and i can connect to my router and go on the internet but the wireless still stays the same
