Laptop to a Ethernet Switch (Cable)

Hi and welcome to D-A-L
what make is the switch and how's it connected to the Internet?
-
The Switch I have is a D-Link DES-1005D which is plugged it to a Netgear Modem.
-
is the ethernet cable from the modem plugged into the WAN port on the switch?
-
Arh... here could be the problem "WAN" ??
Okay this is how it is setup the Phone line goes to the Modem, the Modem then links to the Switch, the Switch then goes to the Desktop out of one of 5 holes in the back (WAN's ??)
Leaving 4 Ports left in the switch. (4 WAN's left?).One of the ports in the Switch is then linked to the Laptop which does nothing.

Desktop works fine on the Internet. Plug a cable from the Switch to the laptop and then click on Internet and it says Cannot Find Server.
Now I do no that I did have a X-Box (once) also running thought the switch at the same time, so cannot understand why i am unable to just plug in the ethernet cable straight from the Laptop to the switch and it work.
-
the cable from the switch to the PC what socket is it plugged into?
the cable that goes to teh desktop have you tried that pkugged into teh laptop?
-
No
But i will do now... Please hold caller...hehe..... the line may go silent but i have NOT cut you off
-
Nope
it would appear that it doesnt matter with socket the Desktop is plugged it to it works, but no matter what one you plug the Laptop into to it has no affect.

I would say it has something to do with the laptop Ethernet card.
has it got an Ethernet card? I've just googled and that model only has a 56k modem
