trying to get a local network going
Hello
My main PC is connected to the internet using a USB based ADSL MODEM. I have connected my main pc and laptop to a router.
the main pc has an address of 10.0.0.2 and the laptop has an ip address of 10.0.0.3
the router has an address of 10.0.0.138
is it possible for me to access the internet using my laptop & share a folder and then copy files across from the pc to the laptop.
i tried looking for my computer in mynetworkplaces --> entire network --> microsoft windows network --> mshome but no luck

Yes but you need to enable sharing on the main PC first. Find the Internet connection in Network & Dial-Up Connections, right-click it and then choose the option to share it out across the network. Right-click a folder that you want to share out and choose the sharing option for that as well.
To use the shared Internet connection from the laptop, you may need to change the Default Gateway in the TCP/IP settings from 10.0.0.138 to 10.0.0.2.
If both the PC and laptop are running Windows XP, then you should be able to deal with most of this using XP's built-in Network Setup Wizard.
Hope that helps

thanks for the reply,
so by changing the gateway form 10.0.0.138 to 10.0.0.2 i am effectively removing the router.
so i need a cross over cable to connect my laptop and main pc?

The router (or at least, a network hub or switch) can remain in place if you prefer. The 'Default Gateway' tells the laptop where to go to find addresses that aren't on your local network, e.g. the Internet. To access the Internet through the PC, the laptop shouldn't be stopping at the router - instead, it should be looking for the PC on 10.0.0.2.
If you keep both the laptop and the PC connected to the router, then you will continue to use normal "straight" network cables. Alternatively, you have the option to use a crossover cable directly from the laptop to the PC if you want to take the router out of the equation completely.
