    Norton Internet Security 2004 problem

We have just purchased Norton Internet Security 2004, but have a problem loading it.

We are now in what is a circular problem.

We unintall it as directed by the symantec knowledge base. We reinstall, and we get the same problem.

It fails giving us the following message. Error: "Driver Initialization failed (5004, 115)"

It you look at the advise page,
    here
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...c=eu_sg&csm=no

you will see exactly what we did, and yet it gets to the same place, and fails again and again.

    What can we do?

Symantec have a fee based phone line, but as the problem is based on their inital loading, why should we pay? When you purchase Security software, do you expect it to fail?

I would be gratefull of ay help or advise. Or even your horro experience would at least chher me up.

    Many thanks
    Richard

Most people seem to have this sort of problem if they already have a virus or malware running. I suggest you run something like avast.com and ad-aware (with web update) to remove these items before you try to install NIS 2004. You might want to consider alternative products such as the panda range.

I had exactly the same problem that you are having right now!

I got this information from symantec, its a bit more usefull than the knowledge base.

Here's a step by step guide of how to sort it out. You need to follow the URL links to get the the individual documents.

This issue is caused by adware or malware installed in your system. This issue can also occur when files from a previous version of Norton Internet Security (NIS) are still there on your computer. In order to remove these files, you will have to first uninstall NIS 2004, remove any leftover files from a previous installation of NIS, reinstall TCP/IP and then reinstall NIS 2004. For information on how to uninstall NIS 2004, please refer to the link provided below:

Uninstalling Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall 2004
    http://service1.symantec.com/Support...03090909483236

After this, please use the RnisUPG.exe utility to remove any leftover files from a previous version of NIS. The RnisUPG.exe utility will remove all registry keys created by NIS 2003. For information on how to uninstall, please refer to the link provided below:

Uninstalling Norton Internet Security or Personal Firewall using the RnisUPG.exe removal utility
    http://service1.symantec.com/Support...01090510510636

Now, please follow the steps in the document provided below to reinstall TCP/IP:

How to reinstall or reset TCP/IP
    http://service1.symantec.com/Support...02043011461639

After this, please prepare your computer for the installation of NIS 2004. Please refer to the link provided below for information on how to do this:

Preparing to install Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall
    http://service1.symantec.com/Support...03021114413936

Now, please perform a clean boot of Windows and install NIS 2004. A clean boot is a restart of Windows with no applications running and with as few extra drivers loading as possible. Extra drivers are often installed by applications that are installed after the initial installation of Windows. Please refer to the link provided below for information on how to perform a clean boot of Windows:

Configuring Windows XP to clean boot

For information on how to install NIS 2004 downloaded version, please refer to the link provided below:

    Hope this helps
