sharing internet connections accross 2 pc's

currently own a pc with a broadband internet connection which is in the spare bedroom...this is shared between the whole family. I have just started uni & want to purchase a new pc for myself. having the internet is essential...but i can't afford to install a phone line in my room & pay the monthly line rental & pay for a second internet connection...is there any way i can share the current connection with a new pc & what features would my new pc need to have for this to work?

    Hi and welcome to D-A-L

you can use a router connected to the modem then connect with ethernet cables to the PC's

    who supplies your broadband?

how are you connected at the moment to the modem?

or if you don't want to make a mess with all of those ethernet cables or trying to find the right cable length you can try wireless.

Wireless can go anywhere in the house. But if your modem is close to the computer you want to get internet for, it would be easier with an ethernet cable.

the fetures you would need to have whould be:
    1. A router that would connect to your modem with an ethernet cable
    2. A simple ethernet card to plug the ethernet cable into the back of your computer or if wirless, a wireless card for your computer.
    3. If you wern't going to use wireless you would need an ethernet cable to go from your router into the back of your computer.
