Angry Blonde in need of help!!! Bloody wireless

    Hi all,
I have very basic knowledge of computers and do apologise in advance if you are sick of reading "I have problems with my wireless".
If you would like to help a damsel in distress please read on.........
I have my first pc on a wired connection as recommended when I installed the livebox (I am with orange)
I successfully set up the kids pc to wireless using a D-Link G122 wireless adapter. My wired pc IP is 192.168.1.87 and subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
All was fine for about a month and then tradegy struck.......all it now says is the infamous "limited or no connection" and gets stuck at renewing IP address.
We have a third pc and for all my sins I decided to set up the wireless on that but alas the same happens as before. This pc is running on XP sp2
I have tried the following without any joy
    disabling firewall etc
I have tried using a static IP address-
I have tried the command ipconfig and it says there is no media connection and gives me no information of the IP address - This is where I start waffling cos I haven't really got a clue.
I have run the windows hotfix KB884020-x86 patch as I read that this may be the problem.

I am not sure about the DHCP and how to disable it or whether that would even work.
I have a guy coming to sort it tomorrow but it is going to cost me £58 per hour so would really like to sort it by then. This is making me soooo miserable!
    Cheers in advance
    Dee x

    Hi and welcome to D-A-L

have you got any cables to connect them to the router?

    have you tried ipconfig /all?

have you tried resetting the router.

have you tried another USB slot?

    have you tried another adapter?

    Hi thanks for your reply
Not sure whether I mad it clear before I have no problems at all with the main wired pc's connection to internet. Don't know whther you need to know that but thought I would tell you!
Well I have done the config/all command and it says
    Node type........unknown
    IP routung enabled........no
    WINS proxy enabled........no
ethernet adapter wireless network connection 3:
    connection-specific DNS suffix.:
    description......-Link airplus g dwl-g122 wireless USB adapter(rev.C) #2
    physical address.......:00-15-E9-4B-02-7B
    DhcpP enabled.......: yes
    Autoconfiguration enabled......:Yes
    Autoconfiguration IP address.......:169.254.63.143
    Subnet Mask........: 255.255.0.0
    Default gateway.......:

I have connected the pc to the router via wired connection and the internet worked perfectly and when I did ipconfig it states that the ip address is 192.168.1.78. So I then tried to put this in as a static IP address and no joy! It says connected but there is still no internet. I have also tried pinging it and nothing at all.
I have tried 3 diferent USB's with no luck and tried a different adapter and it does exactly the same.
I haven't tried resetting the router as it worries me that if I do that I will end up losing my connection altogether and only really want to do this as a last resort. How likely is it to work???
I am wondering whether just to sack the whole wireless thing and have wired connections to all 3 pc's. Although its not ideal as it means drilling through walls etc and I didn't really want all the unsightly cables everywhere!
I was told that a PCI card might be a better option but I haven't a clue what one of these is, if you could enlighten me that'd be fab.
    Sorry to be a pain!

It looks like your USB stick is working on a different IP range if your router 192.168.1.1 and your USB adapter is 169.254.63.143

PCI is better the card are about £15 available from most PC shops (your local independent is maybe better)

this is what the look like

Thanks for that link. I think I will try the card. I do have a few questions though.....
Will it come with full intructions of how to install it? I have looked at the back of the pc and can see 4 slots, I think one of them is being used for the old modem - does that sound like the right place to put the wireless card?
What is the difference between the USB and the card and can the IP address mess up again with a pci card?
Thanks again you have been great

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
the card fits inside the PC, it's very easy if you open up the case you'll see some white slots the card just fits into one of those you may have to push out a blanking plate on the back.

is any one else in your area using a wireless set up?

the USB stick may be trying to find another wireless network around you, when you click on the USB stick and ask it to find networks does it find your network.
