Question Completely new to routers - trouble with hosting a game!

Hi there, this is my first post here, I googled this forum and it looked quite friendly and informative. I hope you could help me out with a problem I am having.

I am a complete newbie with routers etc, so I'm afraid any help will have to be idiot-proof!

I have recently purchased a NetGear ADSL DG834 modem/router, and it works perfectly for browsing/downloading on BT Broadband. The problem seems to be uploading and hosting.

I use Torrentleech with Azureus for downloading torrents, and it's fine to download but reports an NAT error which doesn't allow me to upload.

Also, the main problem is hosting a game of Football Manager, to which a friend joins. I am simply unable to get him to join. It reports 'cannot connect to server' when he tries to join my ip (my external ip of course). It is not a fault of his; it worked perfectly before, and has only changed since I got this new modem. I cannot revert back to my old modem as I now have 2 PC's.

I have tried to set up a DMZ server, since that is what I have read to be useful, but with no luck, my friend still cannot connect.

Any help will be most appreciated.

    To reiterate:

NetGear ADSL DG834v3 - need to host online games!

    [edit]typo -_-

You cannot host games on a router...only if you have a direct connection to a modem.
