    Wireless Connection Problem

I recently inherited a laptop with a Linksys Wireless-G Adapter already attached. I am currently using a Belkin 2.4 Ghz 802.11g Wireless router to which I already have 3 other computers connected via "hardwire". How do I make a wireless connection between this laptop and this router? This laptop has been working in a wireless connection to a DSL setup. I have Cable.

When I right click on the icon down in the sys tray I get 3 options:
    (1) Disable Windows XP wireless configuration
    (2) Open the monitor
    (3) Turn monitor off
I clicked on (2) and got a window which said, in part:
"No association with access point" and "Adapter is inactive"/

What's this "access point"? I assumed that the adapter communicated directly with the router. Is there a "middle man", so to speak?

I have another bit of information which may be of help to you in determining my wireless connection problem. There is an icon on the screen identified as "Wireless Access". When I right click on it I get a drop down window. One of the choices is "Run as". When I click on it I get another window which reads, as follows:
"Which user account do you want to use to run this program?" Then it shows the Current user (which is the original owner of this computer, not me) with a bullet in front of it. Then there is a 2nd choice with blanks for both the User Name and Password. When I enter my user name and password and click OK it says: "Unable to log on: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password." How do I get my name registered so that it will be accepted?

    Hi and welcome to D-A-L

have you tried setting up with cables.

have you set it to find available networks, it may be trying to log onto the old network.

Response: If you're asking if I have tried to hardwire the laptop to the router, the answer is "Yes" and it works fine. I just want flexibility of moving around the houw with this laptop. Could it be that the Linksys Adapter and the Belkin wireless router are incompatible? Here is some supplemental information which may be of help to you:
    -------------------------
Clicking on the icon labeled "Wireless-G Notebook Adapter" I get a window within which there are 3 options: Link Information; Site Survey; and Profiles. Clicking on Link Information I get this message: "No association with access point". Clicking on Site Survey I get, under Site Information, the following:
    SSID n/a
    Wireless Mode n/a
    Channel n/a
    Security n/a
    MAC Address n/a

At the bottom there are 2 buttons. One reads Refresh and the other, Connect. But nothing happens when I click on either one. Neither does anything happen when I click on any of the above 5 items. In the lower left hand corner of this window it reads: "Adapter is Inactive".
In clicking on Profiles I get 2 windows, side by side. The first has 2 column headings: Profie and SSID. Under Profile it reads "default". Under SSID it reads" "linksys". In the window to the right there is only one heading: Site Information. Under it there are 5 items and the status of each:

    Wirless Mode Infrastructure
    Transmit Rate Auto
    Channel Auto
    Security Disable
    Authentication Open

Under this list there is a Connect button but nothing happens when I click on it.
