    Question local are connection(cable unplugged)

Hi guys i am new here, i set up my home network i could surf the internet on my laptop, but i can't share files or printer.
i have a router d-link. now on my task tray i got 2 little icons you know what i mean right, lol 1 of them says "wireless network connection" the signal is excellent and status is connected. the 2 one "local area connection" says a network cable is unplugged.
i don't understand why and if i need the 2 one to share files, since i am able to share internet. I try running the network setup wizard on both my desktop and laptop i gave eachcomputer a different name and the same workgroup, i try sharing by right clicking the folder and going into the sharing and security tab.
    i need help

    Hi and welcome to D-A-L

have you got firewalls on the other PC's that are blocking you.?

have you tried using cables to connect to see if you have the same problem?

hi man i try taking firewall on my desktop and laptop off,and nogthing. I was wondering do i need some kind of switch or hub or something else to be able to share files. i run "ipconfig" in the run, cmd, and it says

    "ethernet adapter local area connection"

    Media state.................media disconnected.

what is this all about, but my ethernet adapgter wireless network connection is fine i can see the ip, subnet mask and default gateway

that's your ethernet card, the reason media is disconnected is because your running wireless.

can the other PC's see this one?

hi brain-damage on my desktop i can see both the desktop and laptop, but not when i go to my network places, only when i go to "view workgroup computers". On my laptop i can't see my desktop. when i click on my laptop it says that is not accesible and that i don't have permission to access this computer and that i shuld contact the administrator which i am. i dont remember setting up a password or restriction.

no the router acts like a switch.

connect both the machines to the router with ethernet cables.

are the files on each machine set to share
